Meaning · English

Vishnu is praised for his strength, like a fearsome wild beast roaming the mountains; in his three wide strides all the worlds make their home.

Vishnu is praised for one thing above all: his strength, shown in the deed of the strides. The seer compares him to a wild beast of the high places. Sāyaṇa takes it as a lion, feared by every enemy, moving wherever it chooses and keeping to the heights. He also reads the roaming as Vishnu moving through all three worlds, and the mountain as high places or even the words of praise. The strides are wide enough that every living thing lives inside them.

Picture a farmer pacing out a new field, heel to toe, in three long steps. The family then builds and plants inside the line he walked, and everything that grows there grows within his measure. The worlds are like that field. Whatever lives, lives on ground that Vishnu's strides have already crossed and claimed.
