Vishnu Measures the Worlds

Meaning · English
Let me now tell the heroic deeds of Vishnu, who measured out the earthly realms, who held firm the shared seat above, taking three steps, his stride reaching far.
The seer promises to tell what Vishnu has done, and names two deeds. First, he measured out the earthly regions. To measure is to mark out, and marking out is how space comes to exist at all. Sāyaṇa takes 'earthly' to cover earth, air and sky alike. Second, he fixed in place the shared seat above, the high place where beings dwell together. Sāyaṇa reads it as the middle air that bears the worlds. Both deeds were done in three strides, which earns Vishnu the name Wide-Goer.
Picture someone pacing out a new plot of land, counting long steps from one corner to the next before anything is built. Until those steps are taken, the plot is just open ground. After them it has edges and a shape people can live within. Vishnu's strides do this for the world: his walking gives it its measure.
