Rivers Toward the Sea
Bhagavad Gita 11.28
Meaning · English
As the many rushing waves of the rivers flow swiftly toward the ocean alone, so these kings of the human world enter your blazing mouths.
Arjuna is looking at the cosmic form and trying to say what he sees. He picks three words. Dravanti means flowing rapidly, a run and not a stroll. Abhimukhah means facing toward: each river is already turned to the sea. Vira, in the phrase for kings of human society, means a hero or fighter, so these are the proud men of the battlefield. Plainly, he sees the warriors hurrying into the mouths of God, each on his own course, none turned away. The mouths are abhivijvalanti, blazing on every side, which the calm sea in the comparison is not. The reason is his state: he is shaken, and a comparison from nature is the nearest thing he has to make an unbearable sight feel like a pattern and not chaos. This is his reading in that moment, not yet Krishna's answer. The commentators take the scene differently. Shankara reads it as the Lord's power of time ending all beings, who move toward it by their own course. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord is the one in whom all things rest and toward whom they go. Madhva stresses that God alone rules and moves everything, and the warriors have no independent power.
At closing time a crowd leaves a stadium. Hundreds of people walk from different seats, with different steps and different plans, yet all of them funnel through the same few gates. Arjuna sees the same of the warriors: separate lives and separate roads, all arriving at one opening.
1. Today, when a wave of dread arrives, stop for one minute and name the picture your mind is painting, such as a flood, a wall or a crowd closing in. 2. Write that picture in one line on paper. 3. Under it, write two or three things you actually know for certain about the situation. 4. Wait ten minutes before acting on either list, and notice whether your breathing and your thinking have slowed.
A man stands on a footbridge at dusk, the day he is told his factory will close. Below him the evening shift streams through the gate, hundreds of coats and lunch bags, and his mind makes one picture of it: everyone being swallowed. That is close to what Arjuna does. Fear gathers many separate people and events into a single overwhelming image. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightened body speeds the heart, tightens the chest and narrows attention to the worst thing in view. What the verse shows is a person putting the image into words, naming it as what he sees. Naming it gives it an edge, and the man on the bridge can then ask what is known and what is only the picture: the notice date, the savings, the next phone call. Slow breathing and a few steady minutes help the body settle enough to ask. The verse does not say the factory will survive, and it does not remove grief or the need for practical help, and a doctor is the right person if the dread does not lift.
