Fearful, they enter Your mouths, terrible with teeth, dreadful to see. Some are seen caught between the teeth, their heads smashed to pieces.

Three words carry the picture. Damshtra means a tooth or tusk, and karala means gaping or terrible, so the mouths are fanged and wide open. Bhayanaka means that which causes fear, and Arjuna uses it for the mouths themselves. Curnita comes from a root for grinding to powder, so the heads are not just struck but ground. Arjuna reports what he sees in the form Krishna has shown him. People, themselves fearful, are entering the mouths. Some hang between the teeth, and their heads are smashed. He gives no explanation here and does not soften it. He says what he sees because he is afraid, and in the verse before he said he had lost his bearings and his peace. This is Arjuna's view in that moment, not a teaching Krishna has stated. Shankara reads the vision as God shown as the one in whom the world arises and dissolves. Ramanuja reads it as the sovereignty of the Lord over all beings, including the warriors who fall. Madhva reads it as showing God's supremacy and independence, which Arjuna had not grasped. All three treat the horror as part of what is being shown, not as a mistake in Arjuna's seeing.

At a quarry, trucks tip whole boulders into the jaws of a stone crusher. The rock goes in whole and comes out as gravel, and nobody at the hopper can look away. Arjuna stands at that hopper. The boulders are the kings and generals, and the crusher is the mouths he sees.

1. Today, when you feel dread before something hard, stop for one minute. A phone call, a hospital visit or a difficult talk will do. 2. Name the picture your mind is drawing. Say or write one line: "I am afraid that..." 3. Notice where the fear sits in your body, such as the chest, the stomach or the hands, and stay with it for a few breaths. 4. Then take the first small step toward the task, even if the dread is still there.

A man sits in a hospital corridor late at night with his father's consent form on his knee. The list of risks is short and plainly worded, yet his mind has already made pictures from it. His hands go cold, his heart pounds, and he cannot take in the next line. The verse speaks to this moment because Arjuna also sees the worst in full detail and does not look away. First, the man can notice that the pictures are fear speaking, as Arjuna's vision is his own terror speaking. Then he can say what he sees, as Arjuna does, instead of hiding it. Ordinary experience bears this out: fear narrows attention and shuts out the details that matter. Once he has named the picture, his breathing slows enough for him to ask the surgeon one clear question. The verse does not promise that the risks are smaller than they look, and it does not take away the fear. Medical questions still need a doctor's answers.
