Meaning · English

All these sons of Dhritarashtra face you, together with the crowds of kings allied to them, and Bheeshma, Dronacharya and Karna, and also the chief warriors of our own side as well.

Arjuna is speaking, and what he describes is what he sees in that moment. Three terms help. Avani-pala is a king: avani is the earth, pala a guardian. Sangha is an assembly, a crowd gathered. Yodha-mukhya is a leading fighter: yodha a warrior, mukhya the chief. Plainly, Arjuna names who he sees inside the vision Krishna has shown him: Dhritarashtra's sons, their allied kings, the elders Bheeshma and Dronacharya, Karna, and the best fighters of his own army. The small words with and also keep both sides in one list. Arjuna had refused to fight because he dreaded killing teachers and kin. Now he sees that none of them stands apart, rivals and comrades alike. The sentence runs on into the next verse, so here he only names the people. It asks nothing of the reader except to hear his shock as his own. Shankara reads the form as the Lord as time, to whom the whole world is subject. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's own form, with the world as His body. Madhva reads it as showing God's complete mastery over every being.

A night train pulls out of a crowded station. Friends and rivals sit in the same carriages, and nobody is let off at the next stop. Arjuna sees the same thing: the people he fears and the people he loves are all carried by one movement, and he cannot sort them any more.

1. Pick one task today that you dread, such as a hard call or a difficult meeting. 2. Just before it, stop for one minute and name who will be affected, on every side, including people you trust and people you do not. 3. Notice where the dread sits in your body, and whether it changes once everyone is named.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning. His father is in surgery. Down the bench are the uncles he stopped speaking to years ago and the cousin who owes him money. Beside him is his own sister. For months he has kept a list of who stood on whose side. Arjuna's words show what the moment does to such a list. The elders, the rivals and his own people all appear in one view, and the sides he had drawn stop being the main thing he sees. For the man in the corridor, the first step is to look along the bench and name each person as they actually are, tired and frightened, not as a position in a quarrel. The second is to notice that his own fear is shared. Ordinary experience bears this out: fear narrows attention, and a shared loss widens it. The limit is plain. Seeing everyone together does not mend the quarrel or make the surgery succeed, and it takes away neither grief nor risk.
