Arjuna Sees the Blazing Mouths
Bhagavad Gita 11.30
Meaning · English
You lick up all the worlds on every side, devouring them with your blazing mouths. Your fierce rays, Vishnu, fill the whole universe with their glare and scorch it.
Arjuna is describing what he sees, and the words are his, spoken in terror. Three of them carry the picture. Lelihyase means you are licking, the way a flame licks along a dry log. Grasamana means devouring, taking something in whole. Ugra means fierce, the kind of strength that frightens. Put together, he sees mouths that blaze and swallow worlds from every side, with no gap in the circle. Then the light spreads. It fills the whole universe, and the same light that fills it also scorches it. He does not see a light that warms and a separate fire that burns. It is one radiance, and it does both. He addresses it as Vishnu, the one who pervades everything. The reason he speaks this way is that the vision has overwhelmed him. A moment earlier he saw armies rushing in, and now he sees the whole of creation being consumed. This is how it looks to him, not a settled statement of how things are. Shankara reads the vision as the Lord's power over all things, shown in a form no one can ignore. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's own form, seen by a devotee who is shaken by its fierceness. Madhva stresses the Lord's total mastery over the world, which Arjuna now sees directly. The verse asks Arjuna only to look and say what he sees.
Picture a blast furnace in a foundry with its door open. Its glow fills the whole shed, and the heat reaches your face before you step close. The same fire gives the light and does the burning. Arjuna stands in front of the cosmos like that: one radiance that fills everything and scorches everything.
1. Once today, when something much bigger than you comes up, such as a deadline, a bill or a piece of news, stop for one minute before reacting. 2. Say plainly, aloud or on paper, what you actually see, in two or three short sentences, without softening it. 3. Notice your body for those same minutes: breath, hands, jaw. Let the fear be there without arguing with it. 4. Only then ask one question, the way Arjuna does next: what exactly is this, and what is mine to do about it?
A shopkeeper's son stands on a roof in the monsoon, watching brown floodwater climb the lane and carry off the stock from his father's shop. His heart pounds, his thoughts jump about, and he wants to look away or start shouting orders that no one can follow. Arjuna's words show another way to stand in such a moment. He does not shrink the sight or dress it up. He says what he sees as exactly as he can: mouths, fire, everything being taken in. In the son's case that would mean naming it in plain words: the water is at the second step, the stock is going, the street is closed. Once it has been said that plainly, there is something to act on, such as who needs to be called or what can still be carried upstairs. Ordinary experience bears this out: fear tends to shrink once it has a clear name. The verse does not promise that the water will stop, that the loss will be small, or that fear will vanish. Arjuna is still shaking when he finishes speaking.
