The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 11 · The Universal Form

Who Are You, Really?

Bhagavad Gita 11.31

Meaning · English

Tell me who you are, in this fierce form. I bow to you, God of gods; be merciful. I wish to know you, the primeval one, for I do not comprehend your workings.

Arjuna has just watched the friend who drives his chariot turn into something that devours worlds. This is his reaction, and it is his view in that moment, not the book's settled teaching. He asks a plain question: who are you? The fierce form, ugra-rupa, means a shape of terrible heat and force. He does not run from it. He bows and asks for prasada, which means mercy, a settling of the heart. Then he gives his reason. He wants to know the primeval one, and he admits he cannot make out the pravritti, the workings, which means what this being is doing and why. He is not asking for comfort. He is asking for understanding, and he asks it humbly. The old friend he thought he knew has become too large to read. Shankara takes the question as being about what this form is for. Ramanuja hears the devotion of a servant who wants to grasp his master's intent. Madhva also reads it as a plea to learn the purpose behind the sight. All three treat the bow and the question as belonging together.

A child wakes at night and sees a huge shape in the yard through the window. She does not hide under the blanket. She grips the sill and calls out, softly, who is there? The shape is the fierce form, and the call is Arjuna's request to know it.

1. Choose one thing today that unsettles you because you do not understand it: a bill, a medical letter, a piece of news. 2. Spend two minutes writing two lines: what I know, and what I do not comprehend. 3. Before you ask anyone, pause for one slow breath and drop your head slightly, a small bow to the fact that you do not know. 4. Take the second line to someone who can explain it, and ask it in plain words.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his father is wheeled in for a scan. A doctor says a word he has never heard, and the room tilts. He wants to nod and say nothing, or to leave. The verse shows another way. He can say how he feels, be courteous, and ask directly: what is this, and what is it doing? Step by step, he admits he does not follow, he asks for patience, and he asks for the plain account, not only the verdict. Ordinary experience confirms that fear shrinks a little once a thing has a name and a reason. The verse does not promise the answer will be gentle. In the text, the answer that follows is harder than the question. It also does not replace the doctor's explanation, which the man still needs in full.
