Meaning · English

The Supreme Lord said: I am time, grown mighty, the source of the worlds' destruction, now engaged in drawing the worlds in. Even without you, none of these warriors arrayed in the opposing armies shall remain.

Arjuna asked who this fierce form was. Krishna answers with one word: kala, time. It is the same word for the clock and for death, the thing that ripens and ends everything. He calls himself loka-kshaya-krit, the maker of the worlds' wasting, and pravriddha, grown full, at the height of his strength. Then pravritta: he is at work, engaged, already in motion. This is not a threat about the future. The gathering-in has begun. The second half addresses Arjuna's dread directly. Even without you, these warriors will not remain. Their ending does not wait on his arrow, so he cannot be its author. Krishna says it to loosen Arjuna's belief that he alone decides who lives and dies. The text asks him to see his own place inside something much larger than his choices. Shankara reads the passage as the Lord's power appearing as time, with Arjuna a mere occasion. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's sovereign will, which uses Arjuna as its instrument and leaves him a servant, not an owner, of the outcome. Madhva stresses the Lord's complete independence: everything that acts does so under his control.

A tide is coming in over a beach covered with sandcastles. A child stands guard over one, pushing the water back with a spade. The tide was rising before the child came, and it rises whether he digs or not. Time is the tide, the warriors are the castles, and Arjuna is the child who thinks his spade decides.

1. Tonight, choose one thing you have been gripping hard, such as a worry over an outcome or a date that must go your way. 2. Sit for five minutes and say quietly: this was moving before I touched it, and it will move after. 3. Notice what loosens in your shoulders and jaw, and what still asks for your effort. 4. Then do the one small task that is truly yours, and leave the rest alone for the evening.

Meena, a retired schoolteacher, stands in her kitchen the morning the papers arrive for the family house. A new road will take it. For weeks she has lain awake asking what she should have done, which petition she should have signed, whom she should have phoned. Hold this beside Krishna's words and her night changes in steps. First she sees that the road was coming whether or not she had acted; the asking of what she alone should have done assumed too much of her power. Second, the weight of sole authorship lifts, and grief stays but guilt eases. Third, what remains is the work actually in her hands: packing, thanking the neighbours, choosing what to carry. Ordinary experience agrees that people who blame themselves for what was never theirs to control tire sooner and decide worse. The verse does not promise that she will stop mourning the house, or that nothing could have been done in any case. It does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness continues. It only says that time works through all things, and that she is not its sole hand.
