Rise and Be the Instrument
Bhagavad Gita 11.33

Therefore arise and win honor. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. By me these men have already been slain. Be only the instrument, Arjuna, you who can draw the bow with either hand.
Three words carry it. Uttishtha means stand up, from a root for rising. Yashas is honor, the good name that follows right action. Nimitta-matra is made of nimitta, the occasion or instrument through which something happens, and matra, only. Krishna tells Arjuna to get up from the chariot floor, where he sat down in despair. He is to win honor by defeating his foes and to enjoy a prosperous kingdom. Then comes the reason: the warriors are already slain by Krishna, so Arjuna is only the visible hand, the archer skilled with both arms. This answers Arjuna's dread that he alone will be the killer of teachers and kin. Having shown himself as time, Krishna takes that weight off him. The outcome is not Arjuna's to carry or to claim. What Krishna asks is action without the burden of being its sole author. Read in order, the verse says: because this is already in motion, rise. The commentators differ on emphasis. Shankara takes the instrument as the one through whom the Lord, the true doer, acts. Ramanuja reads Arjuna's fighting as service offered to the Lord's purpose. Madhva stresses that God alone is independent and the soul acts only in dependence on him.
A farmhand lifts the board of a canal sluice. The water was already waiting and the field already sloped to receive it. His hands only opened the way. Arjuna is the hand on the board, and what Krishna says is already decided is the water.
1. Pick one task you have been putting off because the outcome frightens you, such as a hard call or a form to submit. 2. Stand up, literally, and begin it within the next ten minutes. 3. While you work, name the part that is yours (the effort, the care) and the part that is not (how they answer, how it ends). 4. Afterward, notice for one minute whether your body feels lighter for having handed that second part over.
A tailor's daughter stands outside a municipal hearing where she must speak for her father's shop. Her hands are cold. She has rehearsed, but a voice in her head says the decision is already made and she alone will be blamed if it goes wrong. Krishna's words would change the moment in steps. First, rise: she walks in rather than waiting for certainty. Second, she sorts what is hers from what is not. Her words, her facts and her calm are hers. The officials' minds and the final ruling are not. Third, she speaks as an instrument of her father's case, not as its sole judge. The verse does not promise she wins, nor does it remove her fear or her grief if the shop closes. Ordinary experience does confirm one thing: dread grows heavier when a person believes she must control every result, and lighter when she is asked only to do her part well. The text offers this as Krishna's teaching to Arjuna, spoken to a man who believed he alone carried everything.
