Drona, Bheeshma, Jayadratha, Karn, and the other brave warriors: I have already killed them. Slay them. Do not be disturbed. Fight. You will be victorious over your enemies in battle.
Krishna names four men on the far side of the field: Drona, Bheeshma, Jayadratha and Karn, with the rest of the brave warriors behind them. Arjuna dreads facing them, since two of them are his teacher and his grandfather. Three words carry the weight. Hata means struck down, finished. Krishna uses it for men still standing and says 'by me, already'. Vyatha, the root of the word for being disturbed, means trembling, a shaking of the mind. Krishna tells Arjuna not to be shaken. Jeta means one who wins, and Krishna says Arjuna will be that. The plain sense is that the result is already settled by Krishna, who has just shown himself as Time. Arjuna does not have to carry the weight of being the one who destroys. He is still told to slay and to fight, so the command stands. The reason is Arjuna's paralysis. He cannot bear to be the killer of his own people, and Krishna answers by moving the ownership of the result, not by calling the grief foolish. Shankara reads the outcome as the Lord's will, with Arjuna only the occasion for it. Ramanuja stresses the Lord's full control over every being, so that Arjuna's act is the Lord's work. Madhva stresses that victory comes by the Lord's grace and not by Arjuna's strength.
A tailor lays cloth on the table with the cutting line already chalked across it. His hand shakes at the first cut, because the cloth is costly. The line was drawn before he lifted the shears. He only has to follow it steadily. Arjuna's task is the cut, and the pattern was drawn by someone else.
1. Today, pick one task you have been dreading, such as a hard conversation, a bill, or a message you keep putting off. 2. Before starting, sit for one minute and notice where the dread sits in your body. Name it once, silently. 3. Ask which part of the outcome is truly yours. Your effort is. The other person's reaction is not. 4. Do the task for ten minutes, with your attention on the next small action and not on how it ends.
A woman in her forties stands in her uncle's kitchen holding a folder of papers. He raised her, and the family shop he built has to be sold, because the debts leave no other way. She has rehearsed the sentence for a week, and her hands are cold. Krishna's words ask her to separate two things that have fused in her mind. The shop's fate was settled by the accounts and the years, and she did not choose it. What remains hers is how she speaks: slowly, kindly, with the papers laid out honestly. She stops asking herself whether she is the one destroying him, and starts asking what the next honest sentence is. She says it, then the one after. Ordinary experience agrees that a task is easier to begin once its outcome stops being blamed on us. The limit is plain. This does not remove her grief or his, and it does not make the sale painless. It also does not say every outcome is fixed. Krishna says it to a man on a battlefield, at one particular hour.
