Meaning · English
Sanjay said: Hearing these words of Keshav, the crowned one, Arjun, trembling with joined palms, bowed down again and spoke to Krishna in a faltering voice, overwhelmed with fear.
Sanjay is the one telling this, and it is his view of the moment: he reports what he sees and hears on the field to the blind king Dhritarashtra. Three words carry the scene. Kritanjali is joined palms, the hands pressed together in respect. Vepamana is trembling, the body shaking on its own. Gadgada is a voice that catches and breaks. Sanjay says Arjun has just heard Krishna's words about the war and its outcome. He answers with palms joined, shaking, bowing down a second time, and speaking in a broken voice, bhita-bhita, fear piled on fear. The reason is what Arjun has been shown: Krishna's vast form, and Krishna's statement that the great warriors are already struck down. Nothing in Sanjay's report calls this weakness. He simply sets down a warrior, the crowned one, with arrows in both hands, whose body gives way before something larger than him. He does not stand up and argue. He bows and speaks anyway. Shankara reads the fear as the natural response of a person who sees the Lord as the whole world. Ramanuja reads the trembling as devotion before the Lord's greatness. Madhva reads it as Arjun recognizing the Lord's supremacy over everything. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It tells how Arjun stood.
A small boy stands on a station platform as an express train thunders past, close enough to shake his coat. He grips his mother's hand, goes quiet, then looks up wide-eyed. The shaking and the hand-holding happen together. Arjun's fear and his joined palms are like that: one reaction to something far larger than himself.
1. Next time you notice dread before something hard, such as a difficult call or a doctor's visit, stop for ten seconds and just name what your body is doing: shaking hands, dry mouth, tight voice. 2. Say nothing against it. Notice that you can feel all of that and still stand there. 3. Then do one small respectful thing, such as sitting down, folding your hands, or speaking slowly, and notice what happens.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at night. The surgeon has just said his father needs an operation within the hour. His hands start to shake, his mouth goes dry, and when he tries to ask a question his voice cracks. He is embarrassed and tries to hide it. Arjun's example in Sanjay's report goes differently. He does not hide the trembling or wait until it passes. He folds his hands, bows, and speaks in the voice he has. For the man in the corridor, that could mean sitting down, letting the shaking be, breathing out slowly, and asking the question with a broken voice rather than staying silent. Ordinary experience confirms that a body flooded with alarm shakes and the voice tightens, and that this is not a failure of character. It also confirms that a few slow breaths and a steady posture help the words come. The verse does not promise the fear will leave, the operation will go well, or the father will recover. It only shows that a person can be afraid and still turn toward what is in front of him.
