Arjuna said: It is only fitting, master of the senses, that the world rejoices in praising you and is drawn to love you. Demons flee in fear in every direction, and hosts of perfected saints all bow down.
Three words carry the verse. Hrishikesha, the name Arjuna uses, means master of the senses: hrishika is the senses, isha is the lord. Prahrishyati means to rejoice, to bristle with gladness. Anurajyate means to be colored by love, drawn toward something and attached to it. Arjuna has just seen the cosmic form and heard Krishna say the great warriors are already slain. His first words afterward are that it is sthane, fitting and right, that the whole world delights in praising Krishna and loves him. Then he sets two groups side by side. The demons, rakshasas, run in every direction out of fear. The siddhas, hosts of perfected saints, bow down. The same sight sends the fearful scattering and brings the accomplished to their knees. This is Arjuna's reading in the moment, spoken while still shaken, and the reason he gives is simply what he has just witnessed. He is not stating a rule. Ramanuja, who reads the Gita as devotion to a personal God, takes the rejoicing world as those devoted to Krishna. Shankara treats the praise as Arjuna's recognition of the Lord's supreme nature. Madhva stresses that Krishna's greatness is beyond all else, so every being responds to it according to its own nature.
Picture a monsoon storm breaking over a village. Farmers stand in their doorways glad for the rain, while stray dogs bolt for cover and monks keep sitting where they are, heads bowed. One event, and each kind of creature answers in its own way. So the one great presence draws gladness, flight or reverence according to who faces it.
1. Once today, when something much larger than you comes into view, such as a night sky, a crowded river or a storm, stop for a minute and say nothing. 2. Notice what your body does first: pull back, lean in, or go quiet. 3. That evening, write one line on which of those it was. Do not grade it. Only see which way you turn when you face something vast.
A grandmother stands at the back of a crowded temple hall during a festival evening. Lamps are lit, voices rise together, and a child beside her starts to cry from the noise while an old priest nearby simply folds his hands. Arjuna's verse speaks to this moment. He has just seen something too large to hold, and he notices that others around it react differently: some run, some bow, and the world at large rejoices. Step by step, the verse would change her moment like this. First she sees that her own unease is one reaction among several, not a failing. Second, she sees that the child's fear and the priest's stillness come from the same scene. Third, she can stay a moment with the feeling, without pushing it away. Ordinary experience confirms that awe and fright feel close in the body, with a fast heart and held breath in both. The verse does not promise that fear fades, nor that the vast will feel kind. It is Arjuna's account in a shaken hour, and it offers no cure for a frightened child or an anxious adult who needs real care.
