Meaning · English
Why should they not bow to you, Great One, greater even than Brahma, the original creator? Limitless One, Lord of the gods, Refuge of the universe, you are the imperishable, the manifest and the unmanifest, and that which is beyond both.
Arjuna asks a question that already contains its answer: why would anyone not bow? This is his view in the moment, after seeing the cosmic form, and the text lets it stand as his. Three words carry it. Mahatman is the great self, one whose being is larger than any measure. Akshara is the imperishable, literally what does not decay or fall away. Sat and asat are what is manifest and what is not yet or no longer manifest. Arjuna says Krishna is the imperishable, is both the seen and the unseen, and is also what lies beyond that pair. He calls Krishna greater than Brahma, who is the creator, and the original maker behind the maker. He adds that Krishna is the limitless one, lord of the gods, and the refuge where the universe rests. The reason is what Arjuna has just witnessed. Gods, saints and demons have all reacted to the form, so bowing seems to him the only fitting response. Shankara reads the imperishable as the formless Brahman beyond cause and effect. Ramanuja reads Krishna as the Supreme Person, with the imperishable understood within his own wider reality. Madhva reads Krishna as Vishnu, wholly distinct from and above Brahma and every other being.
Someone turns a kitchen tap and water runs. She follows the pipe back to the town reservoir, then to the river feeding it, then to the snowfield far above. Brahma is like the reservoir, a great source for everything below. Arjuna says Krishna is the mountain beyond, the place the whole chain began.
1. Tonight, step outside or stand at a window for two minutes. Look at the sky or at one tree. 2. Name silently three things in view that you did not make and cannot make: light, air, the ground you stand on. 3. Bow your head slightly, or simply pause, for one breath. 4. Notice whether your worries feel the same size afterward. Do not force an answer.
A new father sits in a hospital chair at four in the morning, his daughter asleep on his chest. He has no list in his head, no argument to win. He feels small, and oddly glad to be small. Arjuna's question reaches that moment. Bowing, in his words, is simply what a mind does when it meets something much larger than itself. He does not say it is a duty. Step by step, the father stops managing the hour and lets it be larger than his plans. He thinks of who came before him and who will come after. His own worries take their place within that, and his breathing slows. Ordinary experience confirms that awe loosens the grip of self-concern for a while. The Gita gives Arjuna's words as his view at one overwhelming moment, and the text treats the greatness of Krishna as its own teaching, not something to be tested here. The verse does not promise the feeling will last, and it does not take away the father's tiredness, his fears for his daughter, or his need for sleep and for help.
