Bhagavad Gita 11.38
Meaning · English
You are the original God, the primeval person. You are the supreme resting place of this universe. You are the knower and the one to be known, the highest abode. By you the universe is pervaded, you of infinite forms.
Arjuna is speaking here, and this is his view in the moment he sees the cosmic form. Take three words. Adi-deva means the first God: adi is 'at the beginning', deva is 'a shining one'. Purusha means a person, a presence, and purana means ancient, from before all else. Nidhana means a place where something is laid down and kept, a resting place or store. So Arjuna calls Krishna the first God, the ancient person, and the place where the whole universe rests. Next he says Krishna is both the knower and what is known, and the supreme abode, dhama, the home beyond which nothing is sought. Then he says the universe is pervaded by Krishna, and that Krishna has infinite forms. The reason is plain in the scene: Arjuna has just seen what he took to be his friend and charioteer hold the whole world inside him, and he reaches for the largest words he has. Nothing here is asked of him yet; he is praising, and the praise is his. Shankara reads the knower and the known as pointing to one Brahman beyond all division. Ramanujacharya reads them as God who knows all and is the one to be known, while the world stays his body. Madhva keeps God and the world distinct, with God as the supreme ruler of all.
Picture a lake after rain. Every stream, ditch and gutter on the hillside runs down into it, and the water in each one was already the lake's water on its way. Arjuna sees the universe like that: everything arrives from one source and settles in one place.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes near a window or outside and name five things you can see or hear. 2. For each one, ask quietly where it came from and where it will go. Do not look for an answer; just let the question stand. 3. Close by saying one line of thanks, aloud or silently, to whatever you feel holds all these things. Notice whether the room feels any different afterwards.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for news about his father's surgery. He has no part left to play. He cannot operate, cannot hurry the clock, cannot even sit still. Arjuna's words give him something to do with that hour. He can say, as Arjuna does, that what is happening sits inside something far larger than this corridor, and that he is held there even when he cannot hold anything himself. The words ask him to stop gripping the outcome, and to let his breathing slow while the lights hum. He may find his shoulders drop a little. Ordinary experience confirms that when people feel part of something larger than their fear, the fear often loosens its hold. The verse is Arjuna's praise, and the tradition presents it as his vision of God, which this card does not weigh. It makes no promise about the surgery, and it does not take away the worry, the tiredness or the grief if the news is bad. The surgeon and the nurses still carry what only they can carry.
