Meaning · English
You are the wind, death, fire, water and the moon. You are Brahma, the maker, and the great-grandfather of all. Salutations to you, a thousand times, and again, and yet again. Salutations, salutations to you.
Arjuna is speaking, and this is his view in the moment. He has just seen Krishna's cosmic form and starts naming the great powers he knows: the gods of wind, death, fire and water, and the moon-god. Each was worshipped in his day as a ruler of one part of the world. He says Krishna is every one of them. Then comes prajapati, Brahma, the maker of beings, and prapitamaha, the great-grandfather. A great-grandfather stands behind the grandfather, and Brahma is called the grandfather of creatures, so Arjuna places Krishna one step behind the maker himself. Then he runs out of names and only bows. Namah means a bowing, a salutation. Sahasra-kritvah means a thousand times, and he adds again and again. The repetition is the point: he has no words left. Commentators read the list differently. Shankara takes the gods as the one Brahman showing itself in many roles. Ramanuja takes them as the body of Krishna, who is their inner self. Madhva takes Krishna as the supreme Lord who is above these gods and rules them. All three agree Arjuna is honouring something beyond every power he can name.
A glass held under a tap keeps filling after it is full, and the water runs over the rim onto the hand. Arjuna's repeated bows are that overflow. Naming wind, fire, water and moon is the glass filling, and the thousand salutations are what spills when it cannot hold more.
1. Tonight, before your meal, name three things you depend on without thinking: the water in the tap, the flame or heater that cooked the food, the air in the room. 2. Say a thank-you for each one aloud or silently, slowly, then say all three a second time. 3. Notice whether the second round feels different from the first. It takes about two minutes. 4. Do it again tomorrow, with three new things.
A young father stands in a hospital corridor at three in the morning, his newborn asleep in the cot beside his wife. He thanks the nurse. Then the doctor. Then the nurse again. He knows it is not enough and says it anyway. Arjuna's bowing runs the same way. He names the powers he knows, finds the list too small, and falls back on repeating one word. Ordinary experience agrees that when feeling is larger than speech, people repeat themselves, and the repeating carries what the words cannot. Step by step, the verse shows what to do with such a moment: name what is in front of you, say thanks plainly, and let it be said more than once without worrying about being exact. The text offers this as Arjuna's answer to what he saw, not as a rule for everyone. It does not remove the tiredness of the corridor or make the night's fears any smaller, and it is no replacement for the care the doctor is giving. It gives the grateful heart a way to speak.
