Salutations to you from the front, and from behind. Let my salutations be to you from every side, indeed from all sides, you of infinite power and boundless valor. You pervade everything, and so you are everything.
Arjuna speaks here, and this is his view in that moment, not yet a teaching the book states in its own voice. Three words carry it. Namah is a bow, a salutation. Ananta-virya is power without end, and amita-vikrama is valor and might that cannot be measured. Sarvam samapnoshi means you reach and fill everything, and so, Arjuna concludes, you are sarva, all. Arjuna has just seen the cosmic form, which has no front and no back. So he bows toward the front, then toward the rear, then toward every side, because there is no direction in which Krishna is absent. His reason is stated in the verse itself: because Krishna pervades everything, nothing is left outside him. The verse asks nothing of anyone. It records how a stunned man reacts when his friend turns out to be larger than any place he can stand. For the commentators, Shankara reads the pervading as the one reality underlying all things. Ramanuja reads it as Krishna dwelling within everything as its inner controller, while remaining distinct from it. Madhva reads it as Krishna's presence and rule over all, with the world and God kept distinct.
Picture someone standing in a river mouth where the water meets the sea, turning in every direction and seeing only water, with no bank to face. Wherever they look, the same sea. Arjuna turns the same way, front, back and sides, and finds Krishna filling every direction.
1. Today, pick one ordinary moment, such as stepping into a room or walking to a bus stop, and pause for three breaths. 2. Look slowly to the front, to each side, and behind you, and notice what is there: people, objects, light, sound. 3. In each direction, offer a silent small bow of respect, or just a nod of attention, to whatever you see. 4. Afterward, notice whether the place felt any different to you.
A man stands at the edge of a hospital car park at dusk, having just been told his father will be moved to a ward for the last stage. He feels small, with nowhere to turn. Arjuna's verse gives that moment a different shape. Instead of facing only the one door he dreads, he can turn and look at every side, the nurse at the desk, the cold air, the lit windows, and treat each as worth a bow. Step by step: he stops, he looks forward and back, he lets his attention widen from the single fear to everything around it. The text's teaching, put in Arjuna's mouth, is that the vastness is not hostile. Ordinary experience confirms that attention narrowed by fear usually feels smaller than the room it sits in, and widening it often steadies the breath. The verse does not promise that his father will recover, that grief will lift, or that a doctor's advice can be set aside. It only offers a way of standing, with respect for all that surrounds him.
