Calling Him Friend

Bhagavad Gita 11.41

Meaning · English

Thinking of you only as a friend, I rashly called out, 'O Krishna, O Yadava, O my dear mate,' not knowing this greatness of yours, speaking out of carelessness, or else out of affection.

These are Arjuna's words, and the view is his, in the moment he sees the cosmic form. Three words carry it. Sakha means friend, the plain word for the man who rode beside him for years. Mahiman means majesty, from the root for greatness. Ajanata means in ignorance, not knowing. Arjuna says he took Krishna for a friend and nothing more, so he spoke rashly, with prasabham, a forcing, presumptuous manner. He called him Krishna, then Yadava, after his clan, then sakhe, a casual word like mate. Now he sees what he was speaking to. He offers two possible causes for those words. One is pramada, carelessness, a lack of attention. The other is pranaya, affection, the ease of long closeness. He does not say which it was, and he covers both. The reason is the shock of the vision: the familiar companion turns out to be vast, and the old easy words feel too small. Commentators differ on the emphasis. Shankara reads it as a confession of ignorance about the Lord's true nature. Ramanuja reads the friendship as the Lord's own gracious nearness, which Arjuna now sees with wonder. Madhva reads it as an acknowledgment of Krishna's supremacy over all that Arjuna knew.

A boy has spent years knocking on a neighbour's door and shouting his nickname across the lane. One evening he sees the man on a stage, receiving a national honour while a hall stands to applaud. The boy remembers every casual shout. Arjuna's old names for Krishna are those shouts, looked at again.

1. Pick one person you speak to casually every day: a parent, a spouse, a friend, a colleague. 2. Today, before one ordinary conversation with them, pause for a few breaths and recall one thing about them you rarely notice, such as what they carry or what they have given up. 3. Speak as usual, but with that in mind, and see whether your tone changes. 4. If you remember a careless word from this week, say a short, plain sorry.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his mother is in surgery. The surgeon who walks out is Raju, who sat beside him in school and whom he still calls by a childhood nickname. For a moment the man feels embarrassed about every joke he ever made at Raju's expense. Arjuna's words fit that moment. The old name was not false, because the friendship was real. It was only incomplete. The man can say the name warmly and add a quiet thanks. He can drop any need to defend himself, and he can see that carelessness and affection often sit together in long friendships. Ordinary experience confirms that closeness dulls attention to the other person. The text offers this as Arjuna's confession, not a rule that friends must turn formal. It does not undo any hurt a careless word caused, and it does not say how the surgery will go. It shows only how to look at someone once you see more of them than you did.
