Whatever I did in jest, treating you with disrespect while we played, rested, sat or ate, alone or before others, Achyuta, for all of it I beg your forgiveness, you who cannot be measured.
Three words carry the verse. Avahasa is a joke, laughter that makes light of someone, and artham makes it "for the sake of" that laugh. Asat-krita means treated as nothing, brushed aside. Kshamaye is "I ask you to bear this", from a root for enduring, so Arjuna is asking Krishna to carry what he did. Aprameya means beyond any measure. The plain sense is that Arjuna has just seen the vast form of Krishna. Now he goes back through the years of ordinary company: the games, the naps, the shared seat, the meals. He lists them one by one, in private and in front of others, so no setting is left out. His reason is shock. The friend he teased is immeasurable, and his easy manner now looks like blindness. This is Arjuna's reading of his own past, spoken in that moment. He calls Krishna Achyuta, the one who does not fall, which sets Krishna's steadiness against his own slips. The commentators take it differently. Shankara hears a devotee bowing to the Lord's greatness once he has seen it. Ramanuja stresses that the closeness was real and loved, and that the fear comes from seeing the glory behind it. Madhva reads it as Arjuna acknowledging Krishna's supreme and unequalled standing.
For years a man has ribbed his quiet old neighbour over the garden wall, calling him by a nickname. Then he watches the neighbour receive a national honour on television. Every joke comes back at once, each with its time and place. Arjuna's list of games, meals and rests is that replay.
1. Tonight, think of one person you have treated too lightly, such as someone you teased or spoke over, who turned out to matter more than you showed. 2. Recall two or three specific moments, as Arjuna names playing, resting and eating, rather than a vague "I was bad". 3. Say a plain sorry to that person this week, by message or face to face, naming one moment. 4. Notice whether the apology feels lighter when it is specific.
A man stands at the back of a crowded hall at his old schoolteacher's funeral. Speaker after speaker describes the quiet work she did for children who had no one else. He remembers the nickname he gave her, and the laughter in the lunch queue when he mimicked her voice. Shame comes in a rush, and with it a wish to say something to someone. Arjuna's way of asking pardon changes the next few minutes. He does not settle for a general "I was a fool". He walks back through the particular times, where he was and what he said. He asks for the wrong to be borne rather than defended, and he does not pretend it was nothing. For the man in the hall, that would mean naming one or two memories to her family, plainly and without excuse. Ordinary experience confirms that shame sharpens when we learn how much a person mattered. The verse does not promise that the family will forgive, or that the teacher can hear. It does not promise that the shame will lift. It gives a way to say sorry without hiding.
