Nothing Stands Beside You
Bhagavad Gita 11.43
पितासि लोकस्य चराचरस्य त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गुरुर्गरीयान्। न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिकः कुतोऽन्यो लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रतिमप्रभाव
Meaning · English
You are the father of this world, of all that moves and all that stays still. You are worshipped, teacher, most glorious. None equals you; who could be greater, in all three worlds, O one of matchless power?
Arjuna is still speaking, and this is his view in that moment. He piles up titles. Pita means father: the one from whom the world comes, moving things and unmoving things alike. Guru means a teacher, literally one who is heavy with knowledge. GarIyan means weightier, more glorious. Apratima-prabhava means power with no matching image, nothing to compare it to. The plain sense is a ranking that ends before it starts. Arjuna says no one is equal to Krishna, so the question of someone greater cannot even arise, in any of the three worlds. His reason is what he has just seen: the whole universe inside Krishna's form. Having seen it, the old words friend and charioteer feel too small, and he reaches for father and teacher, names that carry reverence. The verse asks nothing of a listener except that the claim be understood as his. Shankara reads the praise as describing the one Lord, source of the whole world, beside whom nothing has independent standing. Ramanuja reads it as Krishna being the Supreme Person, with all beings moving and unmoving as his body. Madhva reads it as the plain supremacy of Vishnu, without equal and without superior.
Someone has sat under a huge old banyan every evening for years, using it only as shade. Then they climb a hill and see how far its roots and branches spread over the whole village. Arjuna is on that hill: the familiar friend turns out to be what everything stands under.
1. Choose one person who has taught or raised you, and who you have mostly treated as ordinary. 2. Today, for two minutes, list three things they gave you that you cannot repay. 3. Say one of them to the person, in a sentence, in person or by message. 4. Notice whether the urge to joke or compare yourself with them softens while you do it.
A woman stands at the back of a hall at her old teacher's farewell. For years she teased him, copied his phrases, argued over small things. Now others stand to speak, and she hears what he did for people she has never met. Arjuna's verse is the moment after such hearing. First, the list of titles replaces the old nickname, so the casual name falls away. Second, comparison stops: when you see the full size of someone, asking whether you are as good, or whether another is better, stops being a real question. Third, the plain gratitude has room to be said. Ordinary experience confirms that open admiration tends to quiet the urge to compete. The verse is Arjuna's reaction to a vision he says he has seen, and the text offers it as his view, not as a rule for how to treat teachers. It does not promise that the teacher will answer warmly, that regret over past teasing will vanish, or that the person admired is in fact beyond all comparison.
