Meaning · English

Therefore I bow down and lay my body flat before you, adorable Lord, to beg your grace. As a father bears with a son, a friend with a friend, a lover with the beloved, so you should forgive me, God.

Arjuna is the speaker, and this is his plea in that moment, not Krishna's teaching. Three words carry it. Pranamya and pranidhaya both describe bowing: bending forward, then laying the whole body down. Prasada means grace, and also clearness or calm, like water that has settled. Arhasi means you are fit to, you can rightly. Arjuna does not demand forgiveness. He says it would suit the one he addresses. The opening word, therefore, ties this to what he has just said. He has seen the vast form and remembers how casually he spoke to Krishna, joking, eating and resting beside him. Awe makes him bow low. His reason for hope is that he knows three kinds of closeness: a father with a son, a friend with a friend, a lover with the beloved. In each, one side puts up with the other's rough ways. Arjuna asks to be treated that way. Shankara, as tradition records, reads the addressee as the one Supreme Lord, the Self of all. Ramanuja reads the three relationships as showing how tenderly God holds those devoted to him. Madhva stresses God's absolute supremacy and the soul's dependence, which makes the prostration fitting.

For years a woman teased the quiet old man at the tea stall. Then she sees him honored on a stage as a famous scientist. She walks up, head bowed, and says she is sorry, trusting his kindness. Awe made her bow, and the old friendliness is why she dares to ask.

1. Today, think of one person close to you whom you have treated lightly, perhaps by a sharp word or by taking them for granted. 2. Tell them so in plain words, in person or by message, with no excuse attached. 3. Before bed, lower your head for a few breaths and name one person or thing you rely on without thanks. Notice whether fear or warmth comes first.

A woman stands at the back of a funeral, thinking of an old teacher who once stayed late to help her, and whom she never thanked. Now she wants to say sorry for the silence, and she does not know where to put it. Arjuna's words show a way. He starts with the plain fact that he spoke carelessly. He bows, which gives the body something to do when words fail. Then he leans on the closeness he already knows, as a child, friend or lover would, and asks to be borne with. For the woman, that could mean writing to the teacher's family that same evening, naming one specific kindness. Ordinary experience confirms that people ask pardon more easily of those they trust to stay. The verse does not promise forgiveness will come, undo what was said, or ease the grief of a person already gone. Arjuna only asks, and the answer is not given here.
