Lakshmana's Departure

The story · English
Rama sat with his head bowed low. He looked as faint and stricken as the moon when Rahu swallows it. Lakshmana saw him like that, and he came forward gladly and spoke to him gently. "Don't grieve for me, my mighty-armed brother. This is simply how time moves. Every creature goes where its own past deeds, good or bad, have already sent it. Keep your promise, gentle one. Put me to death and do not hesitate. Kakuthstha, those who fail to keep their promises go down to hell. Great king, if you have any love or tenderness for me at all, keep your word, and do it without fear." He said it as though he were offering his brother a gift.
Lakshmana's words shook Rama to the depths of his mind. He did not answer him alone. He sent for his priests and his ministers, and when they had gathered he told them everything: the promise he had made, and how Durvasa had arrived. Then he waited for their counsel. Not one of them spoke. The ministers looked at one another and stayed silent. The priests stayed silent too. None of them could bring themselves to say what the promise required, because every one of them knew whose life it touched. The hall was full of people and no one would speak. At last Vasishtha stirred, the old sage whose radiance had never dimmed, and everyone turned to hear him.
"Rama, illustrious and mighty-armed," Vasishtha said, "I knew this long before today. Through my austerities I saw this ruin coming to you, and I saw you parted from Lakshmana. Time is powerful. Do not break your promise. A promise left unkept destroys righteousness. And when righteousness wanes, the three worlds perish with it: the gods, the sages, everything that moves and everything that stands still. So, best of men, protect the universe. Bear this separation from Lakshmana for the sake of the three worlds." He said no more. One by one the other ministers and priests gave their assent. They agreed with every word Vasishtha had spoken. Rama heard their counsel, and he knew what remained for him to do.
Rama turned to Lakshmana before the whole assembly. "Lakshmana, it is not right to act against righteousness. So I renounce you. The good say that to be destroyed and to be renounced are one and the same." That was all he said. Lakshmana did not go home to his own house. His eyes were full of tears, and he walked straight out of that place and away. He went to the banks of the Sarayu. There he rinsed his mouth with its water, as one does before a sacred rite, and stood with his palms joined together. Then he closed every passage of breath in his body. He stood perfectly still, and he did not breathe again.
So Lakshmana, Rama's younger brother, gave himself to that last austerity and held his breath. As he did, flowers began to fall on him from above. The Apsaras, Indra, the other gods and the Rishis were showering them down. Then, beyond the sight of any human eye, the king of the gods took mighty Lakshmana into his own body and carried him back into his city in heaven. The celestials saw who had come among them. Lakshmana was a fourth portion of Vishnu, returned to them at last. They rejoiced greatly at the sight of him, and they gathered around him and worshipped him there.
