The story · English

Rama had ruled for many years in goodness when one day Kala, who is Time itself, came to the palace gate in the shape of an ascetic. Lakshmana was standing at the door, and the stranger spoke to him. "Please tell Rama that I have come on important business. I am the messenger of the great sage Atibala, whose radiance has no equal. I have come for a particular purpose, and I must see Rama." Lakshmana hurried to his brother. "You keep a king's duties well," he said, "and may you win in both worlds. An envoy has come to see you, shining like the sun from the power of his austerities." Rama answered at once. "Bring him here quickly, this bright ascetic who carries a message."

Lakshmana said, "So be it," and led the shining ascetic into Rama's house. The visitor, glowing with his own energy, greeted the king gently. "Great king, may prosperity be yours." Rama welcomed him with water and the guest's offering and asked after his health. The ascetic, a master of speech, sat down on a golden seat. "Tell me the words of the one who sent you," said Rama. The ascetic replied, "If you care for the good of the gods, we must speak alone. And if you respect the sage who sent me, give this order: whoever hears us or sees us while we talk shall be put to death by you." Rama promised. He told Lakshmana to send the doorkeeper away and guard the gate himself.

"Whoever hears or sees us in this room," Rama said, "I will kill." Then, with Lakshmana at the gate, he turned to the visitor. "Great sage, tell me everything, without fear. Who sent you, and what do you want? I am eager to hear." The ascetic said, "Listen, king. Brahma, the great Grandfather, has sent me. I am your son. In your first birth you fathered me on Maya. I am Kala, Time, who destroys all things. Long ago, after you had drawn every creature back into yourself, you slept on the waters of the deep ocean, and I was born. Then you made Ananta, the vast king of serpents. You made the demons Madhu and Kaithabha, and their bones, scattered far, gave this mountain-bearing earth the name Medini."

"From the lotus at your navel you brought forth Brahma and gave him the work of creation. He made people, but could find no way to protect them, so he prayed to you as his father. You took the form of Vishnu, born of Aditi, and guarded the gods whenever trouble came. When the world suffered, you were born on earth to kill the Ten-necked one, and you promised to live among mortals for eleven thousand years. That time is now complete. If you wish to rule here longer, stay. If you wish to return, rule the gods again as Vishnu and free them of worry. That is the Grandfather's message." Rama smiled. "I am glad you came, my son. I came down for the good of the three worlds, and I will go back now. I was thinking of it already."

While Rama and Kala were still talking, the great ascetic Durvasa arrived at the gate. "Saumitri," he said to Lakshmana, "take me to Rama at once. My time is slipping away. Take me in first." Lakshmana bowed at the sage's feet. "Holy one, tell me your business. What do you need? Command me. Rama is occupied just now, so please wait a little while." Durvasa's eyes went red with anger. "Saumitri, if you do not go this very moment and tell Rama I am here, I will curse you, and Rama, Bharata and Shatrughna, and your sons and grandsons. I will curse your kingdom and your cities too. I cannot hold back my rage any longer." Lakshmana thought to himself, "Better that I alone should die than all of them."

So Lakshmana went in and told Rama. Rama took leave of Kala and came out quickly to see the son of Atri. He bowed to the powerful sage and, with his palms joined, asked, "What can I do for you?" Durvasa said, "Listen, Rama, you who love what is right. For a thousand years I have kept a vow of fasting. It ended today. Give me as much food as you can." Rama was delighted and served him a proper meal. Durvasa ate the sweet food, thanked Rama, and went back to his hermitage. Then Rama remembered Kala's words, and sorrow overwhelmed him. He stood silent for a long while, his heart heavy, his face lowered. At last, knowing what must now befall him, he gathered his patience.
