The story · English

The next morning Rama stood in the sacrificial ground and sent for the sages. They came, and they were curious: Vasishtha, Vamadeva, Jabali, Kashyapa, Viswamitra of the long penances, Durvasa, Pulastya of hard austerities, Salastri, Bhargava, long-lived Markandeya, the illustrious Maudgalya, Gargya, Chyavana, Shatananda who knew the law, shining Bharadwaja, Vasuprava the son of Agni, Narada, Parvata, the great Gautama, and many others of firm vows. The mighty Rakshasas came too, and the monkeys, drawn by the same wonder. Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, Sudras and Brahmins arrived in their thousands from every part of the land, all come to see Sita give her proof. When they had arrived they sat down and did not stir, still as mountains, and waited.

Then Valmiki, foremost of ascetics, came quickly into the ground, and Sita walked behind him. Her face was lowered and her palms were joined. Her eyes were full of tears, and in her mind she held only Rama. When the crowd saw her following the sage, like the Vedas following Brahma, a great sound of praise went up, and then a sound of grief, loud and confused. Some praised Rama, some praised Sita, and some praised them both. Valmiki led her into the heart of that vast gathering and spoke to Rama. “Son of Dasharatha, you left her near my hermitage because you feared what people would say. Yet Sita is pure and has kept to the right way. You fear the people's blame, so she is willing to give her proof. Allow her.”

“And I tell you the truth, Rama,” Valmiki went on. “These twin brothers, whom no one can hold back, are your sons. I am the tenth son of Pracheta. A lie does not even rise in my mind, let alone on my tongue. I have done hard penance for many thousands of years. I swear before you now: if Maithili is touched by any sin, let me lose the fruit of all of it. I have never done wrong in thought, in body, or in speech. Only if she is without sin may I enjoy the reward of my goodness. I found her pure in mind and in body, and I took her to the spring in the forest. She has always held her husband as her god. You gave her up out of fear of scandal. I know this by my own insight.”

When the sage had finished, Rama looked at Janaka's daughter standing in the assembly like a goddess, and he joined his hands. “Great one, you know what is right. Your words have no sin in them, and they have convinced me that Janaki is pure. Still, what you have asked shall be done. Let Sita give her proof. Once before, in Lanka, she passed through a trial in front of the gods, and so I brought her home. But the voice of the people is very strong. I knew she was untouched by sin, and still I sent her away. Forgive me for it. I know these twins, Kusha and Lava, are my sons. Yet if Janaki shows her purity before this assembly, my heart will be at peace.”

When the gods learned what Rama intended, they all came: the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Viswadevas, the Maruts, the Sadhyas, the Siddhas, the Nagas and the Rishis, with Brahma at their head. Seeing them gathered, Rama spoke to Valmiki again. “The words of great sages carry no sin. On your word alone I hold Sita pure. But all of these have come to see her proof, and I would be glad if she gave it before them.” As he said it, a wind began to blow, sweet and cool and fragrant, the wind that witnesses right and wrong. It had blown only in the golden age, and now it blew in the Treta age, and everyone marvelled. Then Sita, in a red cloth, eyes lowered and palms joined, looked upon them all.

“I have never thought of anyone but Rama,” she said. “By the strength of that truth, let the goddess Vasundhara make room for me. With my mind, my body and my words I have only ever prayed for Rama's good. By that truth, let the goddess Vasundhara take me into her womb.” As soon as she had sworn it, a wonder happened. Out of the earth rose a throne, heavenly and beautiful, carried on the heads of Nagas of boundless strength, themselves shining and hung with heavenly jewels. The goddess Earth stretched out her arms, welcomed Maithili, and set her on the throne. Seated there, Sita sank into the earth, and flowers fell on her from heaven without pause. From the sky the gods called out, “Your conduct is worthy of all praise, Sita.”

Again and again the gods praised her as they watched her go into the Earth. The sages, the kings and the leading men in the arena could not stop wondering. Her name was cleared, and every creature on earth and in the sky, moving or still, was glad. Some cried out with joy, some fell silent, and some stood motionless, gazing at Rama, or at the place where Sita had been. For one moment the whole universe shared a single state of mind, and all things were equal. When Sita had gone down into Rasatala, the monkeys and the sages praised her over and over in front of Rama. But Rama bowed his head. His eyes filled with tears, and he sat down, his face lowered and his heart sunk in grief.

Grief and anger took him together, and he wept for a while. Then he spoke. “A sorrow I have never known is taking hold of me. Before my own eyes Janaki, lovely as Lakshmi, has vanished. Once she was carried off to Lanka across the ocean while I was away, and I brought her back. Why should I not bring her back from Patala? Goddess Vasudha, return Sita to my sight soon, or my anger will make you pay for this. You are my mother-in-law, for Janaka found Sita in you while he ploughed. Give her back, or give me a place among the gods, so I may live with her. I am beside myself. If you do not return her, I will flood you, and drown your mountains and forests under the waters.”
