I long to see you as before: crowned, the mace and the disc in your hand. Take again that same four-armed form, you of a thousand arms, you whose body is the whole universe.

Arjuna has just seen the whole cosmos in Krishna, and he cannot hold it. So he asks for something smaller. His request is built from three pictures. Kirita is the crown, gada the mace, chakra the disc: the signs of Krishna as Arjuna has always known him, a friend and charioteer he can stand in front of. Chatur-bhuja means four-armed, a form that still fits inside a human frame. Sahasra-bahu, thousand-armed, and vishwa-murti, the universal form, name what is in front of him now: arms without number, a body that holds everything. The plain sense is a plea. He says he wishes to see Krishna just as before, in that same four-armed form, and he asks the thousand-armed one to be that again. The reason is his own state: joy at a sight never seen, mixed with fear. This is Arjuna's wish in that moment, not Krishna's teaching. He asked for the vision, and finds he can take it only in measure. The commentators read the request differently. Shankara takes both forms as the one Lord, the gentler shown for Arjuna's sake. Ramanuja treats the four-armed form as the Lord's own beloved, personal form. Madhva holds that both forms are real and belong to the Lord himself, not an appearance.

A small child lifted onto her father's shoulders at a crowded festival sees a sea of heads, lights and noise stretching away, and goes quiet. Then she asks to be put down so she can see his face. Arjuna is the child, the vast view is the cosmic form, and the face is the four-armed Krishna.

1. Tonight, step outside for five minutes and look at the sky, a wide street or a far horizon. 2. Notice the moment, if it comes, when wonder tips into unease or a sense of being very small. 3. When it does, look at one near, familiar thing: your own hand, a lit window, a cup of tea. Stay with it for a minute. 4. Notice that wanting the familiar face after something vast is ordinary, and nothing to be ashamed of.

A young man stands under the dome of a planetarium as the show zooms out past the sun, past the galaxy, on and on. His palms are damp and his chest feels tight. Something in him has nothing to say. What he wants, more than any more of the view, is the exit sign and the street lamp outside. Arjuna's request has that shape. He does not deny what he has seen; he asks to be shown it in a form he can stand in front of. Step by step: the sight overruns him, the body shakes, he says so plainly to the one person he trusts, and he asks for the known face. Ordinary experience confirms that a shaken mind steadies more easily on something near and familiar than on something immense. The limit is plain. Asking for the familiar form does not remove the fear in that moment, and it does not promise the vision will return or be understood. It only shows a man naming what he can bear.
