The Blessed Lord said: Pleased with you, Arjun, I have shown you by my own yoga power this supreme form, resplendent, cosmic, unlimited and primeval, which no one before you, other than you, has ever seen.
Arjuna has just said the sight left him trembling, so Krishna explains what it was. Three words carry it. Prasanna means pleased, and its root sense is clear and settled, like water that has stopped churning. Krishna says the vision came from a calm gladness toward Arjuna, not from anger or a test. Atma-yoga means his own power, something that belongs to him and answers to no one else. Arjuna did not produce the sight by effort. Krishna did the showing. Tejomaya means made of radiance, and ananta means without end. Adya means first, before everything else. So the form has no edge, no beginning, and is made of light. Krishna adds that nobody else has seen it as Arjuna has. The reason he gives is to settle a frightened friend. What shook Arjuna was a gift. Shankara reads the power as the Lord's own divine lordship, which no ordinary effort could command. Ramanuja stresses grace: the Lord shows himself to a devotee out of his own will. Madhva holds that the form is real and belongs to the Lord's nature, and is seen only when he allows it.
A grandfather opens a locked trunk in the attic and lifts out a faded uniform and a map, things no one else in the family has been shown. The child is awed and a little scared. The trunk is the hidden vastness, the grandfather's choice to open it is the gift, and the child's shaking does not cancel the kindness.
1. Tonight, pick one good thing you have that you did not earn by effort alone, such as a teacher, a meal or a friend's patience. 2. Sit for two minutes and name who gave it and why you think they did. 3. Say thank you to that person, in words or a short message, before the day ends. 4. Notice whether the thing feels lighter once you see it as given rather than owed.
A young man's father hands him the shop keys and the old ledgers and tells him things about the family's debts that no one else has heard. He feels honored and sick with dread at once. His heart pounds, his hands are cold, and he cannot tell which feeling is which. Ordinary experience confirms that fear and excitement feel much alike in the body. The verse gives him a way to take it. Krishna tells Arjuna that the overwhelming sight was a gift from someone pleased with him. The young man can slow his breathing, say aloud that this is a lot, and ask his father to go through it in smaller pieces. He can let the honor and the fear both be true without picking one. Krishna does not ask Arjuna to feel calm at once. He explains where the sight came from. The limit is plain: seeing a heavy thing as a gift does not shrink its weight, cancel the debts or remove the fear. It only changes whom he thinks he is facing, and that makes it easier to stay in the room.
