Meaning · English
Not by sacrifice, nor study of the Vedas, nor charity, nor rituals, nor severe austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of mortals by anyone other than you, best of the Kurus.
Krishna lists five ways people reach for the highest: sacrifice (yajna, an offering made with ritual), study of the Vedas, giving in charity, rituals (kriya, prescribed acts), and austerities (tapas, from a root meaning heat, a discipline that burns). He adds that the austerities can be severe. Then he says none of them can bring about this sight of him. The phrase 'in the world of mortals' places the limit on human effort: what is seen here is beyond what mortals can arrange. 'Other than you' says Arjuna is the exception, and Krishna has already said he showed this form out of pleasure and by his own power. So the sight was given. It was not won. The reason Krishna gives is that no practice can compel him. Arjuna may be tempted to think his devotion bought this, and Krishna corrects that. He does not call the practices worthless. He says they cannot force the vision. Shankara reads the verse as saying rites and learning alone do not give this sight; it comes with grace and knowledge. Ramanuja stresses that it is granted to the devoted whom the Lord favours. Madhva stresses that only the Lord's own grace discloses him. The verse asks the listener to hold effort without bargaining.
Before dawn, people climb a hill and wait on the ridge. The climb is real work and puts them in the right place. But nobody up there makes the sun rise by climbing harder. The practices are the climb, and the vision is the sunrise, which comes by its own will.
1. Pick one practice you already keep, such as a prayer, a fast, a walk, or a gift to someone. 2. Do it once today without expecting any result. Before you start, say quietly, 'I am doing this, not buying anything.' 3. Afterwards, notice for a minute whether you feel pride, disappointment, or nothing. Do not argue with the feeling. Just name it. 4. If you catch yourself keeping score this week, put the score down and do the act again.
A man has gone to every talk, read every book, and kept every fast. Now he sits by his father's hospital bed at night and feels nothing he was promised. He begins to think he has done it wrong, as though all those years were payment that was refused. Krishna's words to Arjuna change the moment in steps. First, the five practices are not a fee, so a quiet heart is not owed for them, and its absence is no verdict on him. Second, he can stop pressing on himself to feel something. Third, he can keep sitting, hold his father's hand, and leave the rest to what is not in his control. Ordinary experience agrees with part of this: sleep cannot be forced by trying harder, and trying often drives it away. The verse does not say the practices are useless, and it does not promise that the feeling will come that night. It does not ease the fear of losing his father or take the place of the nurses and the doctor.
