Do not be afraid, and do not be bewildered, having seen this terrible form of mine. Free from fear, with a glad mind, behold again that very form of mine.
Krishna has just shown Arjuna the whole universe in one body, and Arjuna is shaking. Here Krishna speaks to the shaking. Three words carry it. Vyatha is trembling, the body's pain at something too big. Vimudha-bhava is a bewildered state, where the mind cannot tell up from down. Vyapeta-bhi means fear that has gone out, as a breath goes out. Prita-manah is a mind that is pleased, warm and at rest. Krishna names both troubles, the fear and the confusion, and says to put both down. Then he asks Arjuna to look again at that very form, now with a glad mind. The reason sits in the words themselves: what Arjuna saw was terrible, yet it was Krishna's own form, shown out of kindness, and the one standing beside him is the same one. The verse asks Arjuna to meet what overwhelmed him with a steadied mind. Shankara reads the 'that very form' as the familiar form of Krishna that Arjuna knew and loved. Ramanuja likewise takes it as the beloved, gentle form of the Lord who is Arjuna's friend. Madhva stresses that the vision came by the Lord's will and that the comfort comes by his grace.
A small child is carried into a dark room where a sudden loud noise goes off. She screams and clings. Then her father says her name and turns on the light, and she sees it is her own kitchen. The noise was real, and so is the familiar face holding her. Krishna is that face to Arjuna.
1. Tonight, recall one thing that frightened you this week, and sit quietly with it for two minutes. 2. Name the two parts separately, aloud or on paper: what I am afraid of, and what I am confused about. 3. Think of one person or one place that has always steadied you, and look at the frightening thing again with that in mind. 4. Notice whether your breath and shoulders loosen even slightly.
A mother stands in a hospital corridor after the surgeon has listed every risk of her daughter's operation. Her hands shake and the numbers swim. She cannot tell which fact matters. Krishna's words to Arjuna would change that moment in steps. First, he separates the two troubles: the fear in the body and the muddle in the mind. She can feel her hands shake and let that be one thing. Then she can ask the surgeon one plain question and write down the answer, which clears a little of the muddle. Last, she turns toward the one she is there for, rather than staying fixed on the picture of the danger. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightened body settles a little when someone familiar is near and one question has been answered. The verse does not promise that the operation will go well, and it takes away neither the danger nor the grief if it goes badly. It does not replace the surgeon's judgment or a doctor's care. What it offers is a steadier way to stand in front of what is terrible.
