Bhagavad Gita 11.50

Meaning · English

Sanjay said: Having spoken to Arjun in this way, Krishna, son of Vasudev, showed his own form once more. Then the compassionate one took on the gentle, two-armed form again and consoled the frightened Arjun.

This is Sanjaya reporting, so it is his account of what he saw, not a teaching Krishna gives. Three words carry it. Rupa means shape or form, and Sanjaya says Krishna first showed his svakam rupa, his own form, and showed it a second time. Saumya means mild, soft, pleasing to look at, and it describes the two-armed shape Arjuna knew. Ashvasayam asa means to make someone breathe easily again, which is to console. The sequence is simple. Krishna finishes speaking, shows the form once more, then returns to the gentle shape. Sanjaya gives the reason in two words: Arjuna was bhita, frightened, and Krishna is mahatma, great-hearted, compassionate. The gentle form is offered because a frightened man needs it, and Sanjaya presents it as an act of kindness. The commentators read the first form differently. Ramanuja takes the own form to be the four-armed shape Arjuna had asked to see. Shankara takes the gentle form to be the human shape Arjuna knew as Vasudeva's son. Madhva holds that all the forms belong to the Lord himself and none is a lesser disguise.

A father lifts his small child to look over a bridge rail at a roaring river. The child grips his collar and goes stiff. He steps back, kneels, and takes the child's hand at ground level. The river is the vast form, the kneeling father is the gentle one, and the hand is the comfort.

1. Today, notice one moment of dread before something hard, such as a phone call, a test result or a difficult talk. 2. Name the feeling in a single word, quietly, and breathe out slowly three times. 3. Then turn to something familiar and gentle: a friend's voice, a cup of tea, a known face. 4. Notice how long it takes your body to settle.

Meena, nineteen, has just come out of a loud MRI tube, shaking, her jaw tight. The technician, who was behind glass a minute ago, walks in and speaks in an ordinary voice: it's done, you did well, sit a moment. Sanjaya reports something close to this about Krishna. Arjuna has seen too much, and what settles him is the familiar shape and the kind address, not an argument. Step by step: the frightening thing ends, a known presence returns, and the words say plainly that the fear was seen. Ordinary experience agrees that a calm voice and a familiar face slow a racing body faster than an explanation does. The verse promises none of this for every fear. It does not say the frightening thing was unreal, that the fear was foolish, or that comfort always arrives. It is also no substitute for a doctor when the shaking, the dread or the panic keeps coming back and does not settle.
