Meaning · English
One who does his work for me, holds me as the highest, is devoted to me, is free from clinging, and bears no ill will toward any being, he comes to me, son of Pandu.
Krishna ends the vision of the cosmic form by naming one person in five strokes. Take three words apart. Karma is action, so the first clause is about work done as an offering to him, not for the praise or pay. Bhakta comes from a root meaning to share in, to belong to: a devotee is someone who is attached to God by love. Sanga is clinging, the sticky hold of wanting a result or a person to stay as they are. Nirvaira means without vaira, without enmity or grudge. The plain sense: this person works, aims at God as the highest thing, loves him, holds nothing too tightly, and wishes no being harm. Krishna gives this as the last word on how Arjuna can reach him, after saying that rites and study cannot show him. The problem it answers is how a man about to fight can be devoted at all. The answer is that devotion lives in the way he acts and in how he treats others. Krishna asks of Arjuna work offered, a fixed aim, a loose grip and a heart with no hatred. Shankara reads the verse as a summary of the whole Gita's teaching. Ramanuja reads the work as service to the Lord, joined with loving devotion. Madhva stresses knowing God as supreme over all, with his grace bringing the devotee to him.
A traveller walks home at dusk along a crowded market road, eyes on the lit window of his house. He does not stop to haggle at every stall, and he does not quarrel with those who jostle him. The house is God, the walking is the day's work, and the stalls and jostlers are clinging and enmity.
1. Tonight, before you sleep, name one task you did today and say silently that it was for God, however small the task. 2. Tomorrow morning, pick one person you hold something against. Spend two minutes wishing them an ordinary good: a decent meal, a quiet night. 3. Once during the day, notice something you are gripping, such as an outcome or a plan. Loosen your hands and your shoulders for one slow breath.
A taxi driver sits in a jam with a passenger who is late for a flight. A car cuts in front of him, and his jaw sets and his hands tighten on the wheel. He wants to shout, to follow the man, to be proved right. The verse, as Krishna gives it, would change the moment in steps. First, the drive becomes his work, offered, so the passenger's flight matters but his own pride stops steering. Second, the clinging to a clean, fast trip loosens, since traffic was never his to command. Third, the anger at the other driver is let go, and he wishes him no harm, though he still brakes and stays alert. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a clenched grudge tires the body and narrows attention. The verse does not promise the jam will clear, the flight will be caught, or that goodwill will make strangers kind in return. It also does not replace care for real danger, such as a reckless driver who must be reported. Its promise, in Krishna's words, concerns reaching him, not the traffic.
