Bhagavad Gita 11.54
Meaning · English
Only by devotion that has nothing else mixed into it, Arjun, scorcher of foes, can I be known as I am now, be seen, and be truly entered into in union.
Three words carry the verse. Bhakti is devotion, a loving turning of the whole self toward God. Ananya means 'not other', so devotion with no second object mixed in. Tattva means 'that-ness', the thing as it really is, which is why tattvena means truly, and not just on the surface. Krishna has just shown Arjuna the cosmic form and told him that study, penance, charity and ritual could not win that sight. Now he says what can. Devotion that is undivided makes three things possible, and they come in a rising order: to know him, to see him, and to enter into union with him. Knowing is of the mind. Seeing is direct sight. Entering is the end of standing apart. The reason he gives is in the word 'unalloyed'. A mixed devotion, half for God and half for gain, reaches only what it aims at. He names Arjuna as scorcher of foes, a warrior used to pointing all his strength at one target, and the same concentration is asked here. The commentators read the verse differently. Shankara takes the devotion as one with knowledge that ends in oneness. Ramanuja takes it as loving meditation, the very means of reaching God. Madhva stresses devotion rooted in knowing God's supremacy, with God's grace giving the sight.
A magnifying glass held over a dry leaf. Sunlight spread across the whole yard only warms it. Gathered to a single point, the same light kindles it. Devotion with other aims mixed in is the spread light. Devotion with nothing else in it is the point, and it reaches what scattered effort cannot.
1. Choose one short time today, five minutes at most, and give it to God alone: a prayer, a name repeated, or silent thanks. 2. Ask for nothing in that time. Notice how soon a request or a worry slips in. 3. When it does, set it aside gently and return to the one thing. 4. Afterwards, note how many times you drifted. Do the same tomorrow at the same hour.
A woman lights a lamp at her home shrine before dawn. Within a minute her mind is on the bus fare, the unpaid bill, what to cook. Her lips keep moving, but she is no longer there. The verse speaks to exactly this. Krishna says the devotion that reaches him is the one with nothing else mixed in. So the first step is only to notice that her attention has left. The second is to bring it back to the lamp, the name she is saying, the warmth of the flame. The third is to do this again each time it leaves, without scolding herself, because the returning is the practice. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: attention split between many things gives each of them very little. A conversation held with a phone in hand is thinner than one held without. The verse does not promise that the mind will stay still, or that knowing, seeing and union will arrive within a morning. It names undivided devotion as the way and does not set a timetable. It also does not replace a doctor for a mind that is racing from illness or grief.
