Meaning · English
Not by the Vedas, not by penance, not by gifts, not by sacrifice can I be seen in this form, as you have seen me.
Krishna names four respected ways of building spiritual merit: study of the Vedas (veda, the sacred texts), tapas (heat, hence hard austerity or penance), dana (giving, charity), and ijya (worship, ritual offering). He says none of them can bring a person to see him as Arjuna has just seen him. The word evam-vidha, 'of this kind', points to the cosmic form specifically, not to Krishna in general. The reason follows from the verses before it. Even the gods long for this sight and rarely get it, so it cannot be a wage paid for good work. Arjuna saw it because Krishna showed it. The verse also does not call these practices worthless. It says they do not command this sight. What it asks of the listener is to stop treating the vision as something earned and ready to be claimed. The next verse says what does open the way. Shankara reads the verse as setting aside effort-based means in favour of knowledge and grace. Ramanuja reads it as pointing to bhakti, devotion, as the one real means. Madhva stresses that the Lord's grace alone decides who sees.
A guest cannot get into a house by being the best-dressed person at the gate, by bringing the costliest gift, or by knocking longest. The door opens when the host chooses to open it. The credentials are the four practices, and the host is Krishna.
1. Pick one good thing you do regularly, such as a prayer, a reading, or a donation. 2. Today, do it once without counting it as credit toward anything. Don't note it, mention it, or add it up. 3. Afterwards, sit for two minutes and notice whether you wanted something back for it, such as approval, relief, or a feeling of being owed. 4. If you did, just see that, without scolding yourself.
A mother has spent the whole month on a fast, a pilgrimage and daily prayers for her son's recovery, and now stands in the hospital corridor as the doctor walks toward her. A quiet bargain has been running in her head: I did all this, so it must turn out well. Krishna's teaching here loosens that bargain. Her devotion was real and needed no justification, but it was never a payment that forces an outcome. If she lets the bargain go, she can hear what the doctor says without it first being measured against what she believes she has earned. She can still act, ask questions and stay with her son. The verse does not promise that he will recover, that effort buys safety, or that any practice replaces the doctor's care. Ordinary experience confirms that people who feel they have paid in advance often meet bad news with anger as well as grief. The verse does not remove the grief. It only takes away the extra burden of a debt that was never owed.
