The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 11 · The Gentle Form Again

Seen By Few, Even Gods

Bhagavad Gita 11.52

Meaning · English

Krishna said: This form of mine that you have just seen is exceedingly hard to behold. Even the celestial gods are always longing for a sight of it.

Krishna begins by naming how rare the sight was. Su-durdarsham joins su (very) and durdarsham (hard to see): a sight that is seldom granted, not one that is simply hidden. Rupa is form, the shape something takes when it appears. Nityam means always, without a break. Darshana is the act of seeing, and kankshin is one who aspires, so the gods are described as constant aspirants of this sight. The plain sense is that Arjuna has been given something even the gods go without. Krishna says this after the vision has frightened Arjuna and after he has returned to his gentle human shape. The reason he gives is that Arjuna should not treat the vision as ordinary. It was a gift, and its worth is measured by how rarely it is seen. The verse asks Arjuna to hold the memory with weight, and to see that his friend and charioteer is more than he looked. Shankara reads the verse as praise of the vision's rarity, pointing to the Lord's supreme nature. Ramanuja takes it to show that the form is reached only by the Lord's grace, not by the gods' own effort. Madhva stresses that even the gods depend on God to be shown it.

Picture a crowd packed outside a stadium for a once-in-a-lifetime event, and one person who has been walked through the gate and seated in the front row. The crowd stands for the gods who long to see, and the front seat is Arjuna's sight of the form.

1. Choose one ordinary thing you have been given today: a meal, a person's help, an hour of quiet. 2. Before using it, stop for about a minute and ask how many people would want exactly this and do not have it. 3. Say a quiet thank you, aloud or in your head, then carry on. 4. Notice whether the thing feels different afterwards.

A man stands at a train platform at dawn, on the morning after his daughter's wedding, watching the last guests leave. He has been busy for weeks, and now the whole event feels like it passed in a blur. What the verse offers here is a way to measure what he was given. Krishna tells Arjuna that the sight he received is one even the gods long for. Applied to the platform, the man can take a rare day and see it as rare, instead of letting it slip into the pile of things that simply happened. Step by step: he notices what he almost missed, he lets the weight of it be felt, and he lets gratitude follow. Ordinary experience confirms that things taken for granted fade quickly, while things we pause over stay with us. The verse does not promise that the feeling lasts, that the next day will be easier, or that rare gifts come to everyone. It does not take the place of rest, which he may also need after weeks of effort.
