Meaning · English
Arjuna said: Those devotees who, ever steadfast, worship you in this way, and those who also worship the imperishable, the formless Brahman — of these two, which are more perfect in yoga?
Arjuna asks a comparison question. He has just heard Krishna described as a person he can see, and also as the unseen ground of everything. Now he wants to know which kind of seeker is better established. Three words carry the question. Satata-yukta means steadily joined: the devotee is not occasionally warm but keeps the link unbroken. Akshara means not perishing, what does not wear away. Avyakta means not manifest, with no form to point at. So on one side stand people who worship Krishna himself, steady and loving. On the other stand people who worship what cannot decay and cannot be pictured. Yoga-vittama means the best knower of yoga, the one who has truly understood how to be united. The question comes from Arjuna, a warrior about to fight, who wants to know where to put his own effort. He is not stating a doctrine. It is his view of the matter that there are two ways, and he asks Krishna to rank them. Among the commentators, Shankara reads the formless worshippers as the seekers of the imperishable Self, and he takes the answer to be about how the two relate. Ramanuja holds that devotion to the personal Lord is the higher course. Madhva also places loving worship of the Lord first.
A lamp you can hold lights a room, and you can carry it from one corner to another. Daylight lights everything and cannot be held at all. One person reads by the lamp, another walks out into the open morning. The lamp is the Krishna a devotee can address by name. The daylight is the formless imperishable.
1. Tonight, sit quietly for five minutes and bring to mind a name or picture you love, a deity, a teacher, or a parent. Notice whether your mind settles. 2. Tomorrow, sit for five minutes with no picture, only the plain sense of being present. Notice again. 3. Write one line on which felt steadier. Do not decide which is better. 4. Repeat both across the week and see whether the answer stays the same.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his father is in surgery. He wants to pray and cannot tell how. Should he speak to God as to a person, or just sit in silence? He starts to feel that he is doing it wrong. Arjuna's question is this same worry, asked aloud before a battle. Taking it step by step: first, the man sees there are two honest ways, to address someone or to rest in what has no face. Second, he notices that the question of which is better is really a question of which one he can keep up. Ordinary experience confirms that a steady habit holds better under strain than a grand one. Third, he tries one for a few minutes and watches what happens in his breathing and thoughts, then lets the other follow. The text leaves the ranking to Krishna's reply and does not give it here. Nor does the question promise that prayer will change what happens in the operating room. It offers a way to stand in the corridor, and it does not replace the surgeon or the nurses.
