Meaning · English

The Blessed Lord said: Those who fix their minds on me, always engaged, and worship me with the best faith, endowed with it fully, I consider them the highest in Yog.

Krishna answers Arjuna's question with three ideas. The first is the mind fixed on him. The word means more than a passing thought. The mind is made to enter and rest in something, the way a person settles into a chair. The second is nitya-yukta, always engaged. Yukta shares its root with yoga and means joined, yoked. Nitya means constant. So the joining is a steady habit, not an occasional burst. The third is shraddha, faith. Its sense is trust given from the heart, which is why Krishna calls it the best kind. Upasana, worship, literally means sitting near. Taken together, Krishna says that people who keep the mind seated near him, day after day, and trust him while they do it, are the ones he counts highest in Yog. He gives the reason by pointing to the joining itself. Yog is union, and these people are already living in it. The asking is quiet: steadiness, nearness and trust, over a long time. Shankara reads the verse as describing worshippers of God as a person, and counts them best within that way of worship. Ramanuja takes loving, constant meditation on the Lord as the very means Krishna is praising. Madhva stresses that this faith rests on knowing the Lord's greatness.

A compass needle shaken by a careless hand swings wildly, then slowly returns and points north again. The mind is the needle. Each time it wanders and comes back to rest on Krishna, that returning is the fixing, and trust is the pull that brings it home.

1. Choose one fixed time today, such as just after waking or just before sleep, and sit for five minutes with a name or image of God you trust. 2. When your mind wanders, which it will, bring it back without scolding. Notice how many times you return. 3. Once during the day, at a pause like a kettle boiling or a red light, give one quiet moment to the same thought. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour. Notice whether the returning gets slightly easier.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her father is in surgery. Her mind jumps from the surgeon's face to the bills to a quarrel from years ago, and none of it helps. Krishna's words point to something simpler. She can choose one thing to rest the mind on, a name, a prayer, or a trusted presence, and each time she drifts she can bring it back, without fighting the fear. She will not stop the fear. The mind will still wander, but it now has a place to return to, and the long wait feels less like falling. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind with nothing to hold tires faster and drifts further. The verse does not promise that her father will recover, that the grief will be lighter, or that she can skip the doctors and the decisions waiting for her. It offers a steady inner footing while she does what is hers to do. Krishna also calls this nearness to him the highest Yog, and that is his teaching, offered as such.
