Worshipping the Formless

Bhagavad Gita 12.3

Meaning · English

Those who worship the imperishable, the indefinable, the unmanifest, the all-pervading, the unthinkable, the unchanging, the immovable, the eternal.

Three words carry the weight. Akshara, the imperishable, is a (not) plus kshara (what wears away or falls). Avyakta, the unmanifest, comes from vyakta, what has been made visible, so it names what has not been. Kutastha, the unchanging, means standing like an anvil or a peak while everything else is hammered and weathered. The other terms keep company with these: indefinable, all-pervading, unthinkable, immovable, eternal. Each says what this reality is not like, because nothing in the hand or the mind can hold it. Krishna tells Arjuna about a second kind of worshipper, one who turns straight to this formless reality with no face or form to look at. Arjuna asked which group is more perfect, and Krishna first describes this group fully and fairly, in grand terms, before he weighs the two. The text asks only for attention to a path before judging it. Shankara reads the words as the Lord himself without attributes, so these worshippers reach him too. Ramanuja reads the imperishable as the individual self seen apart from the body, a harder road than devotion. Madhva reads it as the Supreme itself, known only through grace.

Try describing the air in a room. You cannot point at it, hold it or draw its shape, yet it fills every corner and nothing in the room can push it aside. The worshipper of the formless turns toward something like that: real, everywhere, and refusing every handle the mind reaches for.

1. Tonight, sit somewhere quiet for five minutes with no picture, no image and no music. 2. Say these words slowly to yourself, pausing between each: imperishable, unchanging, immovable, all-pervading. 3. Notice the moment your mind grabs for a face, a place or a story to hold. Let it, and note what it grabbed. 4. Afterwards, write one line on whether having nothing to hold felt easier or harder than you expected.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while her father is in surgery. She tries to pray, but no picture will hold. Every image she reaches for slides away, and her mind drifts to the worst outcomes. The verse gives her a way to describe what she is reaching toward without needing a picture. She can name what does not wear away, does not shift and is not confined to one place, and let those words be the object of her attention. The text presents this as a real path with real travellers. In the next verses Krishna calls it harder for people living in a body, and ordinary experience agrees that a mind with nothing to hold tends to wander. So she may find that an image or a name helps her more tonight, and the text allows for that. The verse does not promise that the fear will lift, that the surgery will go well, or that prayer replaces the surgeons and nurses doing their work. It offers a direction for her attention while she waits, and nothing more.
