The Bow Set Down

Bhagavad Gita 1.47

Meaning · English

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, Arjuna, in the midst of the battlefield, sat down on the chariot's seat. He cast aside his bow together with his arrows, his mind heavy and shaken with grief.

Sanjaya is the speaker, and he is reporting what his eyes show him to a blind king. The words are his, and the picture is his: a man giving way. Three terms carry it. Upavishat means he sat down, and the root sense is settling onto a seat, the opposite of standing ready. Visrijya means casting aside, letting go of something with a throw, not laying it down with care. Shoka is grief, and samvigna means shaken, stirred up on all sides, so the mind is not merely sad but churned. Taken together, the verse says that after Arjuna finished speaking, he dropped into the seat of his chariot and threw down his bow and arrows. A warrior who came to fight now has empty hands. The reason lies in what came before: he had just argued that killing his own kin was a great sin and that dying unarmed would be better. Words became action here. Sanjaya gives no judgment of his own and offers no comfort. He simply tells the king what happened. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see how far grief can take a capable person. Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva each read this moment as the low point from which the teaching begins.

A runner in a relay race reaches the handoff point, then stops, drops the baton on the track and sits on the curb with his head down. The baton is the bow, the track is the battlefield, and the curb is the chariot seat where Arjuna sits, no longer willing to run.

1. Today, notice one moment when you feel like throwing something down: a task, a conversation, a chore you dread. 2. Before you drop it, sit for one minute where you are, and say quietly what you feel, such as heavy, afraid or sad. 3. Then ask whether you are putting it down for a reason or only because the feeling is strong. You need not decide anything yet.

A woman in a hospital corridor has just heard her mother's doctor list the options for surgery. She was ready with questions on the way in. Now her hands shake, she sits on the bench, and her bag slides off her lap onto the floor. She does not pick it up. The verse shows this very moment, the body giving way before the mind has decided anything. Seen this way, her sitting down is not a verdict on her. It is what a body does under heavy distress. First, she can let herself sit, since standing was not helping. Second, she can name what she feels, fear or grief, without arguing with it. Third, she can wait until her breathing slows before choosing. Ordinary experience confirms that a shaken mind judges poorly and that hands often drop what they hold. The verse does not promise that sitting will solve anything, or that the grief will lift. It does not replace the doctor's advice or the support of family. It only records the collapse truthfully, as Sanjaya saw it.
