The story · English

Driptabalaki, of the Gargya family, was a learned man. He went to Ajatasatru, king of Benares, and said, 'I will tell you about Brahman.' The king said, 'For a talk like that I'll give a thousand cows. People will come running, calling out, "A Janaka, a Janaka."' So Gargya began. 'The person up there in the sun. Him I worship as Brahman.' Ajatasatru said, 'Don't talk to me about him. I worship him as the foremost, the head and king of all beings, and whoever worships him so becomes just that.' Gargya tried again. 'The person in the moon.' 'Don't talk to me about him. I know him as the great king Soma, robed in white. Whoever worships him so never runs short of food.' 'The person in lightning,' said Gargya. 'I know him as the Brilliant,' said the king, 'and his worshipper grows brilliant, and so do his children.'

Gargya did not stop. 'The person here in space,' he said. 'Him I worship as Brahman.' 'Don't talk to me about him,' said Ajatasatru. 'I know him as the Full, the one who does not act. Whoever worships him so is filled with children and cattle.' 'The person in the wind.' 'I know him as Indra, the fearsome one, the army no one defeats. His worshipper cannot be beaten.' 'The person in fire.' 'I know him as the Vanquisher. His worshipper vanquishes, and his children after him.' 'The person in water.' 'I know him as the Counterpart. Children who are like him are born to the one who worships him so.' 'The person in a mirror.' 'I know him as the Shining One. His worshipper shines, and outshines everyone he walks with.' Each time Gargya offered something, the king already had it, and had it further.

Gargya went on. 'The sound that follows a man as he walks.' 'I know it as Life. Whoever worships it so lives his full span. His breath does not leave him early.' 'The person in the quarters of the sky.' 'I know him as the Companion who never leaves. His worshipper is never without company.' 'The person made of shadow.' 'I know him as Death. Whoever worships him so is not taken before his time.' 'The person in the body.' 'I know him as the Embodied One. His worshipper becomes embodied, and his children too.' Then Gargya fell silent. The king waited. 'Is that all?' 'That is all.' 'With only that much,' said Ajatasatru, 'it is not known.' And Gargya, who had come to teach, said, 'Then let me come to you as your student.'

Ajatasatru said, 'It goes against the usual order of things for a Brahmin to come to a Kshatriya expecting to be taught Brahman. Still, I will make you know it clearly.' He took Gargya by the hand and stood up. Together they went to a man lying asleep. They called to him, 'Great king Soma, robed in white.' The man did not stir. The king rubbed him with his hand, and he woke and got up. Then Ajatasatru asked, 'When this man was asleep, where was the person made of understanding? And where did he come back from?' Gargya did not know this either. So the king told him. 'In sleep that person gathers the powers of the senses into himself and rests in the space inside the heart. Then breath is held in, and speech, and the eye, and the ear, and the mind.'

'While he dreams, these worlds are his. He becomes a great king, it seems, or a great Brahmin. He goes high and low. As a great king takes his people and moves about his own country as he likes, so this one takes his senses and moves about his own body as he likes. But in deep sleep, when he knows nothing at all, he slips out through the seventy-two thousand channels called hita that run from the heart, and rests, the way a boy or a great king or a great Brahmin rests at the very height of joy. As a spider comes out along its thread, as small sparks fly up from a fire, so from this Self come all the breaths, all worlds, all gods, all beings. Its secret name is the Real of the real. The breaths are real, and he is their Real.'
