Not This, Not This

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.3.6

Meaning · English

Its form is like saffron cloth, white wool, a red beetle, flame, a white lotus, sudden lightning. So the teaching: not this, not this. It is the truth of truth.

The teacher first gives the inner person a look: saffron, white, red, flame-bright, sudden as lightning. Whoever knows this, the text says, shines like that lightning flash. Then comes the turn. Every picture falls short, so the instruction becomes 'not this, not this.' Each description is set aside, since nothing stands beyond what that phrase points to. A name is offered instead: the truth of truth. The life-breaths, the powers that keep us alive, are real. This is what makes them real.

A projector throws a red car, a blue sea, a face onto a screen. Each picture is really there, yet none of them is the light. Point at any frame and the honest answer is 'not that one.' The bright colors in the verse are the frames. The light passing through every one is what 'not this' points back to.
