Meaning · English
Renown in cattle, light in stars; birth, deathlessness, joy in the loins; everything in space. Revered as ground, it steadies; as greatness, it enlarges; as mind, it makes one thoughtful.
The teacher is naming places where one reality, Brahman, can be recognized. It is the good name a herd gives its owner. It is the light of the stars. In the organ of generation it is three things: the birth of children, a kind of deathlessness because a family line goes on through them, and pleasure. It is space, where everything rests. Then comes the rule: whatever quality one reveres it as, one gains. Ground gives footing. Greatness gives stature. Mind, meaning the power to reflect, gives the ability to think things through.
Plant a climbing vine at the foot of a post and it climbs straight up. Plant the same vine against a long wall and it spreads sideways across the bricks. The sap and the leaves are the same. Only the support differs. The one reality works like this: hold it as ground, greatness or mind, and it shapes a person to match.
