One Being, Person and Sun

Taittiriya Upanishad 3.10.4

Meaning · English

As bowing, it bends desires toward him; as Brahman, it gives him Brahman; as the dying-ground, his rivals perish. One being dwells in a person and in the sun.

The 'it' is the reality the teacher has been tracing through food and breath. Each way of holding it in mind shapes what comes back. Hold it as namah, bowing, and the things a person wants bend toward him. Hold it as Brahman, the vast, and he takes on that vastness. Hold it as the ground where things die back into it, and those set against him fall away around him. Then the list stops. The presence inside a human being and the one in the sun are not two.

After rain, a puddle on the pavement holds a small, bright sun. It is not a picture of the sun. It is the same light from the sky, landing low enough to step over. The life in a person and the sun overhead work the same way: one light met in two places.
