Meaning · English
Knowing this, leaving this world, he passes through the selves of food, breath, mind, understanding and joy, roams these worlds eating and taking form at will, and sits singing.
Someone who has understood the teaching does not stay stuck at any one layer. At death he moves in through each self in turn: the body built from food, the breath that keeps it alive, the mind, the understanding that judges, and finally joy. Having reached the innermost, he is no longer bound by place or shape. He moves freely through the worlds, feeds as he likes, takes on any shape he likes. And he sits singing a chant whose words are only cries of wonder.
A guest who has walked from the gate through each room of a house to the inner courtyard knows the whole place. After that, every door is open to him; he can step into any room and leave again. The selves are the rooms, joy the courtyard at the center; the free roaming is that ease of coming and going.
