The story · English

Parasara said to Maitreya, "I have told you about the creation of Brahma that comes from dullness. Now I will tell you about the creation called Rudra. Listen." At the start of a Kalpa, Brahma was lost in thought, wishing for a son like himself. Then, on his lap, a child appeared. He was red-blue in color, and he went about crying in a sweet voice. Brahma asked him, "Why are you weeping?" The child answered the Lord of creatures, "Give me a name." "Divine one, your name is Rudra," said Brahma. "Do not cry. Be patient." But the child cried again. He cried seven more times, and each time he was answered.

After each of the seven cries, the Great-father gave him another name. The names were Bhava, Sarva, Isana, Pasupati, Bhima, Ugra and Mahadeva. Each name had a holder, and the holders were the Sun, water, earth, fire, air, ether, the initiated Brahmana, and Soma. Each also had a wife. Parasara named them for Maitreya: Suvarchala, Uma, Sukesi, Siva, Dik, Diksha and Rohini. They are the wives of the Rudras, who are the Sun and the rest. "Now listen," said Parasara, "as I tell you their children, whose sons and grandsons have filled the universe." The sons of the Eight Forms are, in order, Sanaischara, Suka, Lohitanga, Manojava, Skanda, Swarga, Santana and Budha.

Rudra, formed in this way, took Sati as his wife. Then Daksha's anger fell on her, and Sati gave up her body. She was born again as the daughter of Himavat, and her name was Uma. The reverend Bhava married her again. She had been his alone from the beginning. Parasara went on. Bhrigu's wife, Khyati, gave birth to the gods Dhata and Vidhata. She also gave birth to Sri, who is the wife of Narayana. Maitreya stopped him. "We have heard that Sri rose from the Ocean of milk when the deep was churned. Why do you say that Bhrigu fathered her on Khyati?"

Parasara answered, "She is the mother of the universe, and she is Vishnu's energy. She does not fade or end. Vishnu is everywhere, and so is she." Then he began to name them together, one by one. "Vishnu is meaning, and she is speech. He is justice, and she is morality. He is perception, and she is its power. He is merit, and she is the act of piety. He is the creator, and she is the creation. Sri is the earth, and Hari is the one who holds it up. He is contentment, and Lakshmi is lasting peace." He went on to the sacrifice. "He is the sacrifice, and she is the gift. She is the first offering, and Janarddana is the sacrificial cake. She is the hall, and he is its beam."

"Kesava is the Sun, and the lotus-seated goddess is its light. Vishnu is the fathers who have died, and she is Swadha, who gives them their fill. Govinda is the Ocean, and Sri is its shore. He is the Indra of the immortals, and she is Indra's queen. He is Day, and she is Night. He is the bridegroom who grants boons, and she is the bride in the lotus grove. "What use is going on? I will say it briefly. Hari is all who are called male: gods, men, beasts and other creatures. Lakshmi is all who are called female. Nothing exists beyond these two."
