The story · English
Parasara began to speak, and this is what he told. From Brahma, the intelligent one, beings came forth that were born of his mind. They carried within them causes and consequences, and they arose from his own person. Out of his body the souls came out as well. In this way every living thing was brought into being, moving and unmoving alike, from the deities at the top down to the things that cannot move at all. All of them were set in the three spheres of the world, just as Parasara had already described to the one listening. But there was a problem, and the story turns on it. These beings of Brahma did not multiply. Their number did not increase.
Brahma saw that his beings were not multiplying, so he made others. These too were born of his mind, and he made them in his own likeness. They were Bhrigu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Angiras, Marichi, Daksha, Atri, and Vasishtha, who was also born of the mind. The Purana says that these nine resemble Brahma himself. They were made in his image, from his own thought. The creation had stalled once already, and now he gave it nine sons who were like him.
Those who had been created earlier, before these nine, by the Vedas, were free of love and free of hate. They possessed the highest knowledge, and that knowledge kept them apart. They did not take to the world, and they did not produce offspring. They were indifferent to whether people increased or not. These earlier beings had no wish to fill the worlds. Then a mighty wrath took hold of Brahma. It was a rage that could consume all three worlds. It did not stay inside him. It rose and spread, and the story does not soften what it meant.
The whole triune universe was lit by the flame of Brahma's anger. Every world was bright with it, and the light came from his fury. Then, from his furrowed forehead, which was blazing with wrath, a being sprang forth. This was Rudra. He looked like the sun at midday. His body was half female. He was terrifying, and his form was immense. He stood there, newly born out of Brahma's anger. The creation that had begun so calmly now had a fierce and fearful figure in it.
Brahma spoke to Rudra and gave him one command. "Divide yourself." Then Brahma vanished. Rudra did as he was told. He divided himself into a male and a female. Then he divided the male into eleven parts. The Lord God divided the female too. She became Saumya and Asaumya, Santa and Asanta, Sita and Asita, and many other parts besides, each of them like himself. So the earlier beings who would not create gave way to a creation made out of Brahma's wrath. The one born half female split into male and female and into many.
