The story · English

Maitreya asked Parasara how the reverend Brahma, who is also called Narayana, created all beings at the start of a Kalpa. Parasara said he would tell it. When the last Kalpa ended, Brahma woke from his sleep, filled with the energy of righteousness, and saw a universe that was empty of everything. The supreme Narayana, lord of the greatest, took the form of Brahma and set about creation. The name Narayana has a meaning. The waters are called nara, because Nara made them, and since the waters were once his home, he is called Narayana, the one who rests on them.

Now the whole universe had become a single ocean, and the Lord lay resting on the water. He reasoned that the Earth must be lying beneath it, and he set his heart on rescuing her. In earlier ages he had taken the forms of a fish and a tortoise. This time he took the form of a Boar. He was full of the Veda and of sacrifice, serene in spirit, the soul of all things, and the prop of the Earth. The Siddhas of the region of Jana, Sananda and the others, sang his praises. Then he entered the water, and went down toward the nether regions.

The Earth saw him coming down into the depths. She bowed low, with humility and reverence, and began to praise him. She said, "I bow to you who are all being, you who hold the conch and the mace. Rescue me from here, as you did once before. You are in me, and in the sky and in everything else. You are Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra: you create all beings, you maintain them, and you destroy them. When everything is gone and the world is one ocean, you rest on the serpent-couch, and the wise contemplate you. No one knows the deep mystery around you."

The Earth went on. "Those who want freedom adore you and reach you. Who gets liberation without worshipping Vasudeva? All that the mind can hold, all that the eyes and senses can perceive, is your form. You support me, you made me, you keep me, and so people call me Madhavi. You are sacrifice, the sacred cry, the syllable Om, and fire. You are the Vedas and their branches, the Sun, the planets and the stars. You are what has form and what has none, all I have named and all I have left out. I bow to you, again and again."

Moved by her praise, the Boar roared in the tones of the Sama chant. He raised the Earth on his tusks from the deep. His eyes were like open lotuses, and he rose like a huge dark-blue mountain. As he came up, the churned water flew from his mouth and splashed the ascetics, Sananda and the others, who lived in the region of Jana. Under the blows of his hooves the nether regions broke open, and the water ran down roaring. The Siddhas were tossed about by his breath. The ascetics clung in the pores of his body as he shook himself, and they felt the highest bliss.

The yogis of Jana, with glad hearts and bowed heads, sang to him. "Victory to you, Kesava. The Vedas are your feet, the sacrificial post is your great tusk, and fire is your tongue. Day and night are your eyes, and Brahma's state is your head. The Earth on your tusks looks like a lotus-leaf smeared with mud on the tusk of an elephant that has plunged into a lotus pool. The ignorant take this world for real and fall into a sea of delusion. The wise see it as your form. For the good of the world, Govinda, raise up the Earth."

Hearing this, the supreme Lord at once lifted the Earth and set her on the great sea. She floated there like a vast boat and did not sink, because her body was so wide and flat. Then he leveled her and set the mountains in their places. By his power he made again the mountains that had burned in the destruction of the last creation. He divided the land into seven islands and made the four regions, Bhuva and the rest as before. Then Hari, in the form of Brahma with four faces, began the creation. He was only the instrument. The power in the created things themselves was the real cause.
