The story · English

Before there were worlds, there was Pradhana, the unformed source of everything, and there was the Purusha, who watches over it. Pradhana was ready. The Purusha presided, and from Mahat, the great principle, down to the last of the coarse elements, the powers of creation came together and brought forth an egg. It looked like a bubble on water. The elements nourished it, and it grew. It rested on the water, formed by Prakriti, and it became the body of Vishnu in the form of Brahma. Vishnu, whom no one can perceive, became manifest there and stayed within it as Brahma. The mountain Meru became the inner covering of that great being, the other mountains became the outer covering, and the seas became the water of the womb.

Inside the egg arose mountains and islands, seas and light, and all the worlds, with gods, Asuras and human beings. The egg was not left bare. It was wrapped ten times over, each layer ten times wider than the one inside it. Water came first, then fire, air, ether, and bhutadi, the origin of the elements. Mahat surrounded bhutadi, and avyakta, the unmanifest, covered even mahat. The way a coconut sits inside its rind, the egg sat inside these natural coverings. The water around the shell reaches ten times the span of the earth. Beyond all of them lies the Chief Principle, Prakriti. It has no end and cannot be measured. It is the source of this egg and of thousands, millions, thousands of millions of other eggs.

Then the lord of the universe stirred up passion in himself, became Brahma, and set about creating. Until the Kalpa ends, Vishnu, whose power cannot be measured, is full of goodness, and he sustains what has been made. When the Kalpa ends, Maitreya, Janarddana takes on darkness. He wears a fierce form, becomes terrible, and swallows everything. When all beings are gone, the cosmos is one ocean, and the supreme Lord lies down on the couch of the serpent. Then he rises, in the form of Brahma, and begins to create again. Because he creates, sustains and dissolves, the one Janarddana is called Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. As creator he creates himself. As sustainer he sustains himself. As destroyer he destroys everything. Earth, water, light, air, ether, the senses and the heart are all called Purusha.

Prakriti and the soul, the Purusha, are both held within the energy of Vishnu. At the time of dissolution that energy separates them, and at creation it joins them. It is also what stirs the first agitation, the way wind ruffles the water and makes a hundred bubbles. Creation grows as a tree does. A tree comes from a seed and bears seeds, and from them come more trees like the first. So from Pradhana come intellect and the other first things, then the coarser elements, then Asuras and others, then their sons and their sons' sons. The first tree is not spoiled when another grows from it, and no being is lost when others are created. Hari is the cause of all this growth. The parts of a rice plant are already in the seed and wake when earth and water touch it. In the same way, gods and men appear, each in the state their own deeds have earned, by the energy of Vishnu.

He is Vishnu, the great Brahma, from whom the universe has come, who is the world, in whom the world stands, and in whom it will dissolve. He is the highest abode and the highest state, the essence of all that is seen and unseen, from whom everything living and lifeless proceeds. He is the first nature and the visible universe. In him all beings exist, and into him they will all finally sink. He is the one who performs every devotional rite. He is the sacrifice itself, the fruit it brings, and the tools by which it is carried out. There is nothing but Hari.
