Serpent Garland, Ash-Smeared Body

Shiva Panchakshara Stotram 1

Meaning · English

Bow to Shiva: serpent king for a garland, three eyes, body dusted with ash, great lord, unchanging, pure, clothed only in sky. He is the first sound of his name.

The hymn spells out Shiva's five-sound name one verse at a time, and the first sound comes here. Most of the praise describes how he looks. A great snake hangs round his neck where a flower garland would be. He has a third eye beside the usual two. His skin is rubbed with ash instead of perfume. He wears nothing, and the open directions are his clothing. Under that rough look, he is called great lord, always the same, and clean.

In many kitchens, brass pots are scrubbed with wood ash from the stove. The grey powder looks like dirt, yet it is what leaves the metal shining. Shiva's ash-smeared body works the same way. What looks unwashed at first glance sits right beside the word pure, and the two do not clash.
