Meaning · English
Anointed with heavenly Ganga's water and sandal paste, lord of Nandi and the spirit hosts, worshipped with coral-tree blossoms and many flowers: to Shiva, honored as the syllable ma, salutations.
Shiva is honored here the way a temple image is honored. He is washed with water from the heavenly Ganga and smeared with cool sandalwood paste. He is lord of Nandi, his bull and gatekeeper, and of the rough band of spirits who follow him. That is why he is called the great lord. People worship him with heaps of flowers, and the coral-tree blossom comes first among them. The last line ties all of this to ma, the second sound of his five-syllable name.
Picture a grandmother on her birthday. Someone washes her feet, someone brings a plate of flowers, and the whole noisy household gathers around her chair. Nobody gives her orders. She is the one the house turns toward. The verse pictures Shiva that way: bathed, adorned, and surrounded by a crowd that answers to him.
