Sun to Gauri's Lotus Face

Shiva Panchakshara Stotram 3

Meaning · English

To Shiva, the sun that opens the lotus of Gauri's face, who ended Daksha's sacrifice, the blue-throated, whose banner bears the bull: to him, the syllable shi, bow to Shiva.

Each verse of the hymn hangs on one syllable of Shiva's five-syllable name, and this one belongs to shi. Gauri is Parvati, his wife. Her face is pictured as a bed of lotuses, and Shiva is the sun that makes them open. When he is near, she brightens. Then comes a harder picture: he is the one who put an end to Daksha's sacrifice. He is blue-throated, and his flag carries the bull. Tenderness and force sit side by side in one line.

Think of a fire in a hearth on a cold night. Children sit close to it, faces lit and warm. The same fire, carried to the door, keeps out what should not come in. One flame, two jobs. Shiva holds both here: warm light for Gauri, and the force that ended Daksha's sacrifice.
