Honored Crown, Three Lights

Shiva Panchakshara Stotram 4

Meaning · English

His crown honored by Vasishtha, pot-born Agastya, Gautama, the great sages and the gods; his eyes the moon, sun and fire. To Shiva, the syllable va, I bow.

The verse has two halves. First, the most respected sages, Vasishtha, Agastya, Gautama and the rest, along with the gods, offer worship at the top of Shiva's head. Agastya is called the one born from a pot, a detail the verse names and does not explain. The second half gives Shiva three eyes: the moon, the sun and fire. The three lights the world is seen by are his own way of seeing. The line ends on va, the fourth sound of his five-syllable name.

Think of one room over a single day. Afternoon light comes through the window. Late at night the moon lays a pale square on the floor. When the power cuts out, someone lights a lamp. Every way you have ever seen that room came from one of those three. The verse calls all three Shiva's eyes.
