Shiva Panchakshara Stotram 5

Meaning · English

To him in a spirit's form, hair matted, bow in hand, the ancient one; the shining god clothed by the sky, to that last syllable, salutation to Shiva.

Shiva is named five ways. He appears as a spirit, a being you meet without quite knowing what he is. His hair is matted and uncut, the way a wanderer wears it after he stops tending it. He holds a bow. He was already there before anything began. He is radiant, a god. And he wears nothing at all. Every title names him by what he carries or by what he goes without, and the line closes, as each verse does, with a salutation to Shiva.

Think of a bare hilltop in winter. The grass is gone and nothing grows on it, yet it never looks stripped. The sky sits right down on it, and the hill looks most like itself. Sky-clad works the same way. Shiva needs no robe. The open air covers him, and nothing hides what he is.
